Kyung-Soo Kim
Senior Vice President Kyung-Soo Kim is a professor of mechanical engineering with extensive background in planning and budgetary administrative affairs. Senior Vice President Kim was responsible for the Office of Planning and Budget of KAIST from 2021 as the Dean and the Vice President of the office until he was appointed as the Senior Vice President in 2024. Before assuming the headship of the plannings office, he demonstrated his earlier leadership as he served for five years as the Head Professor of the Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Mobility from Fall of 2015 until Spring of 2021.
Senior Vice President Kim is an alumni of KAIST who earned his Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. degrees in mechanical engineering from KAIST in 1999, 1995, and 1993, respectively. He returned to KAIST as an assistant professor to reinforce the Faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2007 following his professional career at LG Electronics of four years as Chief Researcher, two years at STMicroelectronics as DVD FE Manager and two years of teaching at the department of mechanical engineering of Korea Polytechnic University as an assistant professor.
His main areas of research are on control theory, automotive applications, control of electric vehicles, active noise control for automotive, precision torque control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM - BLAC motors), robotic applications, design and control of bionic robot hand, hydraulic actuator design and control for exo-skeleton, and pneumatic actuator design & application for human assisting device.
His dedication and excellence were noted and awarded with the three-year appointment the KAIST Endowed Chair Professorship in 2014 which came even before his promotion to full professorship in 2015. Upon his advancement to full professorship, he was appointed as the head professor, which is equal to the today’s deanship, of the Cho Chun Shik Graduate School of Mobility in its infancy. At the helm of the school he led the school to take firm root in a time of great transition in to the vast field of clean and smart mobility involving full automation of vehicles, R&D for vehicles and systems for clean energy, and convergence of artificial intelligence and mechnical engineering.
During his headprofessorship at the Graduate School of Mobility, Senior Vice President Kim also served as the Director of KAIST Research Center for Eco-friendly Smart Vehicles from 2017 to 2021. Senior Vice President Kim is currently serving as the Director of Daedong-KAIST Research Center for Mobility and the KAIST Research Center for Next Generation ESS.
Academically, he has co-authored 135 research papers released via SCI listed publications and holds 117 international and domestic patents. He has so far advised 37 doctoral graduates and 73 master’s graduates.
