KAIST President Kwang-Hyung Lee receives honorary doctorate from Université de Montréal
KAIST (President Kwang-Hyung Lee) announced on June 16th that President Kwang-Hyung Lee received an honorary doctorate on the 15th, local time, from the Université de Montréal in Canada, one of the largest French-speaking universities in North America. < Image. Polytechnique Montréal is a university in affiliation with the University of Montréal and is one of the largest engineering education and research institutions of Canada. President Lee's honorary doctorate was awarded at the Convocation Ceremony of Polytechnique Montréal held for the Class of 2024. On this day, Mr. Serge Gendron, a businessman, a philanthropist and an alum of Polytechnique Montréal, also had the honor of receiving an honorary doctorate along with President Lee. President Kwang-Hyung Lee is internationally recognized for his contributions in various fields, including engineering education, multidisciplinary research, strategy establishment, and future prospects. President Lee is also well known to have had significant influence on the first-generation venture entrepreneurs, a large portion of which are from KAIST, who have now grown into full-fledged entrepreneurs. For these activities, President Lee received numerous decorations and commendations within Korea, including the National Order of Civil Merit - Camellia Medal, and in 2003, he received the ‘Légion d’Honneur Chevalier’ from the French government as well. Through his speech at the ceremony, KAIST President Kwang-Hyung Lee expressed his gratitude to the Université de Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, while congratulating and encouraging the graduates who are poised to start anew as they part from the school. “Hold on to your dreams, try looking at the world from a different perspective, and enjoy the challenges without being afraid of failures.” With these three pieces of advice, President Lee cheered on the graduates saying, “The future belongs to those of you who challenge them.” Maud Cohen, the President of Polytechnique Montréal, commented on President Kwang-Hyung Lee's honorary doctorate, that Polytechnique Montréal is proud to award an honorary doctorate to Mr. Lee for his exceptional career path, his holistic, multidisciplinary and undeniably forward-looking vision, which strongly echoes the values of Polytechnique Montréal, and for his involvement in and commitment to education, research and the future of the next generation. * Established in 1873, Polytechnique Montréal is one of Canada’s largest engineering education and research universities, and is located on the Université de Montréal campus – North America’s largest Francophone university campus. Joshua Bengio, who won the Turing Award for establishing the foundations of deep learning, is gaining international recognition in artificial intelligence and other related fields at Polytechnique Montréal. Polytechnique Montréal chose KAIST as the first Korean university establish partnership with and has continued to build up close cooperative relationship since 1998. * The Université de Montréal (UdeM) is a public university founded in 1878. It is located in Montréal, in the French-speaking province of Québec, Canada. It is one of Canada's five major universities, and the second largest in terms of student enrollment. The Université de Montréal is the largest in the French-speaking world in terms of both student enrollment and research. The Université de Montréal enjoys an excellent reputation as one of the best French-language post-secondary institutions. Its rector is Mr. Daniel Jutras.

The Embassy Day Builds the Global Presence of KAIST

The Embassy Day hosted on June 23 will be a stepping stone to diversify its channels for promoting the global presence of KAIST. KAIST invited the foreign diplomatic corps from Seoul to share their successful journey to emerge as the world-class university. The event featured KAIST’s research highlights, academic experiences, and global environment through presentations by faculty and students. KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin said in his welcoming speech that he hopes for brains from around the world to come to KAIST and believes this event will serve as an opportunity to spread the global reputation of KAIST more widely. President Shin, who took office in March, ambitiously hosted this event for the first time, saying, “We didn’t expect this big of a response from the diplomats. The presence of this leading group of diplomats reflects how KAIST’s reputation has blossomed.” Nearly 100 diplomats from 65 countries attended the event held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Among the participants were ambassadors from 33 countries including Australian Amb. James Choi, Canadian Amb. Eric Walsh, and German Amb. Stephan Auer, reflecting the growing interest in the advancements in science and technology education and innovation in KAIST. The entire leadership team of KAIST turned out for the event including Provost O-Ok Park, Associate Vice President of the International Office Jay Hyung Lee, and Dean of Admissions Hayong Shin to provide an update on KAIST activities as well as admission policies, and make a new network with the foreign envoys. At the event, KAIST presented some of its latest research highlights that are gaining international acclaim. Professor Jun-ho Oh, director at the Humanoid Robot Research Center talked on the short history of the development of the KAIST humanoid robot, HUBO, which won the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) in 2015. Distinguished Professor Sang-Yup Lee, dean of the KAIST Institute, which is the center of multidisciplinary research projects in KAIST, made a presentation on advances in metabolic engineering. In addition, Professor David Helfman of the Department of Biological Science shared his research on breast cancer and metastasis. Foreign students and faculty shared their experiences on becoming part of the KAIST community during the testimonial session. In particular, the story of Professor Jean-Charles Bazin of the Graduate School of Culture Technology was quite moving. Originally from France, Professor Bazin talked about his unique career path, starting as an exchange student at KAIST before settling down as a faculty member here. He cited the high caliber group of faculty as one of the reasons he completed his Ph.D. at KAIST. “Most of the faculty members are from top institutions in the US, Europe, and around the world, so they have very resourceful contacts with distinguished researchers and scholars abroad. That helped me make up my mind to choose KAIST,” he said. Currently, 179 foreign faculty and researchers from over 31 countries, representing 8.7% of the total faculty, are working at KAIST. Also, 710 foreign students from 86 countries, representing about 8% of the total students, are now studying at KAIST. President Shin continued, “In this complex global era, brains follow the best path to where they can reach their potential. KAIST is now gaining tremendous strength by becoming a magnet for talents from around the world. We would like to recruit these brains to create new knowledge with a global impact. Then we will become true global university with supremacy in research and education. President Shin said KAIST is gearing up for another round of innovation initiatives in education, convergence research, technology commercialization, future strategies, and globalization. Int'l Telematic Music Concert for Peace to Take Place on Nov. 20
Renowned musicians in five international locations perform new contemporary music works for peace through a real-time performance on the internet. Local audiences in Seoul, Banff, New York, San Diego and Belfast will also have a chance to hear a program. In Seoul, the "International Telematic Music Concert for Peace" will be held at the LeeHaeRang Art Theater, Dongguk University, in Seoul on Nov. 20 at 9:30 a.m., under the presentation of KAIST"s Graduate School of Culture Technology and MARTE Lab, Dongguk University. Telematic music is real-time performance via the internet by musicians in different geographic locations. The program of the concert includes "Hope"s Dream" by Mark Dresser and Sarah Weaver; "Disparate Bodies" by Pedro Rebelo, "Rock, Paper, Scissors" by Chris Chafe. The Korean act to be performed is "Green-colored Harmony" by Jun Kim. In addition to the two Korean universities, the World Association of Former United Nations Internes and Fellows (WAFUNIF), University of California San Diego, the Banff Center of Canada and Queen"s University in Belfast are participating in the project. The performance will take place on high-bandwidth internet with JackTrip audio software developed by Chris Chafe and Access Grid video software developed at Argonne National Laboratory. "Connecting the five different cities together through super-speed Internet network and transmitting sound and images in real time is challenging technically. But, we also expect that more exciting results will be created in the course of transforming the sound into visual images," said Woon-Seung Yeo, a professor of the Graduate School of Culture Technology, who was responsible for visuals in the project.
