Cross-Generation Collaborative Labs Open
KAIST opened two cross-generation collaborative labs last month. This novel approach will pair up senior and junior faculty members for sustaining research and academic achievements even after the senior researcher retires. This is one of the Vision 2031 innovation initiatives established to extend the spectrum of knowledge and research competitiveness. The selected labs will be funded for five years and the funding will be extended if necessary. KAIST will continue to select new labs every year. A five-member selection committee including the Nobel Laureates Professor Klaus Von Klitzing at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research and Dr. Kurt Wüthrich from ETH Zürich selected the first two labs with senior-junior pairs in March. Distinguished Professor Lee's lab (above) andChair Professor Sung's lab) Both labs are run by world-renowned scholars: the Systems Metabolic Engineering and Systems Healthcare Laboratory headed by Distinguished Professor Sang-Yup Lee in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Acousto-Microfluidics Research Center for Next-Generation Healthcare led by Chair Professor Hyung Jin Sung in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Distinguished Professor Lee will be teamed up with Professor Hyun Uk Kim, and their lab aims to mass produce new eco-friendly chemical materials as well as higher-value-added materials which will be used for medicine. The new platform technologies created in the lab are expected to provide information which will benefit human healthcare. Meanwhile, the Acousto-Microfluidics Research Center for Next-Generation Healthcare will team up with Professors Hyoungsoo Kim and Yeunwoo Cho under Chair Professor Sung. The lab will conduct research on controlling fluids and objects exquisitely on a micro-nano scale by using high-frequency acoustic waves. The lab plans to develop a next-generation healthcare platform for customized diagnoses as well as disease treatment. KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin, who introduced this novel idea in his research innovation initiative, said that he hopes the Cross-Generation Collaborative Labs will contribute to honoring senior scholars’ research legacies and passing knowledge down to junior researchers in order to further develop their academic achievements. He said, “I sincerely hope the labs will make numerous research breakthroughs in the very near future.”

Jang Young Shin Chairwoman of AeKyung Group donates 3billion Won to KAIST
AeKyung Group donated 3 billion Won for the development of KAIST and the betterment of Korea’s Science. The ceremony was held on the 2nd of May with President Seo Nam Pyo of KAIST and Jang Young Shin Chairwoman of AeKyung Group in attendance. Chairwoman Jang insisted that the donation be used for the establishment of a stable study environment at KAIST and the improvement of student welfare. Chairwoman Jang is a CEO with an engineering background. She majored in Chemistry in Chestnut Hill College with National Scholarship in 1950 and established the AeKyung Group’s many subsidiaries that deal with Chemicals.

TEAK: New Multimedia Site kaistube.org Offers Lectures on English
For those wanting an experience of KAIST from an entirely new perspective, there is some good news. The new multimedia website, kaistube.org is available for browsing with better and newer content. The website, kaistube.org, is a “Creative media in English by the students of KAIST” and was created with aims to introduce university life from the perspective of the very components that makes KAIST, KAIST; its students. The website features photos the students took and short films they created about KAIST and of KAIST. It can be said that kaistube.org is fast becoming the creative hub and outlet for students at KAIST to express their creative personalities. Students at KAIST or anywhere else for that matter should not be restricted to just academic activities, which make kaistube.org so meaningful. One great service that can be found at kaistube.org is the TEAK (Teaching English at KAIST). TEAK is a weekly show created and hosted by Visiting Professors Tim Thompson and Don Rikley and serves to provide education in presentation skills and writing skills in English. Season one focused on academic writing and Season two will focus on academic speaking and presentation skills. The importance of clear communications skills via presentations or writing format in English has become ever important in this era of globalization. The lectures provided for at kaistube.org is a great resource and guide that will aid not only the family members at KAIST, but to any and all non-KAISTians who wish to strengthen their grasp on the English language. The podcasts can be downloaded onto the computer for transfer to a portable music player, like the iPod or the iPhone, and can be even downloaded from the iTunes.

'Happy College Life' Course Established
The newly established course ‘happy college life’ is attracting attention. The course is aimed at allowing freshmen to experience teamwork, community service, and other participatory activities to find meaning in life and have a happy time in college. The course was planned by sophomores who best understand the freshmen life. It is a mandatory course for freshmen and is comprised of ‘Happy College Life’ I and II in the spring and fall semesters respectively. 950 Freshmen will be divided into 30 classes and will have class every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm. The students will plan community service independently and execute them along with participating in sports competitions, special lectures, dorm parties, and singing competitions. Professors in charge, dormitory deans and upperclassmen will be assigned to each class allowing understanding of freshmen to become easier thereby making it easier to meet the needs of the freshmen. The Academic Advisor will be in charge of counseling and future vocation discussion along with the actual lecture itself. In addition, the teaching assistants will shorten the distance between the professor and the students and look over the students’ everyday life. Resident Advisors consists of the admission interview committee members and will monitor the students they have admitted into KAIST and give advice in matters of vocation and relationships. The upperclassmen who volunteered to become Proctors will live in the same dorms as the freshmen and give guidance on freshmen studies and lifestyle and will focus on being accessible to freshmen instead of being authoritative. In addition, KAIST has established a freshmen support program in order to effectively help freshmen in matters of grades, college life, vocation, and etc. to make acclimatizing easier on the freshmen.

The 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of KAIST Commemoration Held
KAIST, aspiring to become the best Science and Technology University, has turned 40. KAIST held the commemoration ceremony for the 40th Anniversary of the Establishment of KAIST in the auditorium. Five awards (Scholar, Creative Lecture, Excellence in Lecture, International Cooperation, Experiment) were given to Professors Kim Eun Jun and Walton Jones (department of Biology), Professor Abigail Shin (department of Humanities and Social Sciences), Professor Shin Seong Chul (department of Physics), and Professor Lee Sang Yeop (department of Biological Chemical Engineering). Each recipient received a prize of five million won. Professor Song Joon Hwa (department of Computer Sciences) received the ‘New Knowledge Award’ in recognition of his development of the Orchestrator Mobile platform. The new platform is different from Android or the IOS platform in that it allows a fluid relationship to be formed between the smartphone and the user. KAIST also showed off its new emblem. The emblem consists of a star which represents the KAIST’s goals of becoming the world leader, of training leaders, the center point, and hope. The main keywords are: ‘Leadership’, ‘Premium’, ‘Scientific’, and ‘Humanity’. KAIST plans on having various events from May 9th when there will be the Vision Declaration.

KAIST establishes Indoor Location Recognition Industrial-Educational Research Center
KAIST has signed the memorandum of understanding on the 15th of February for the establishment of ‘KTNET-KAIST Industrial-Educational Research Center’ (Head of Center, Professor Han Dong Soo of department of Computer Sciences). Korea International Trade Association and KTNET will be working with KAIST to develop wi-fi based indoor location recognition service and applications of the developed technology. The memorandum of understanding states that KTNET and Korea International Trade Association will be allowed access to the technology KAIST has in order to obtain competitive advantage in the field of location recognition. In addition, KAIST will continue on making technological advances in the field of wi-fi based indoor location recognition for the next 5 years, develop new core technologies and applications, along with the export of related technologies abroad, under the support of the KITA and KTNET. The KTNET-KAIST research center is special in that it has been derived off of the technology developed for the hosting of the G20 Global Summit. Last year, KAIST, KITA, and KTNET developed a wi-fi based Coex indoor navigation system and called it ‘myCoex’ and released it to the public in tandem with hosting G20 Summit. ‘myCoex’ application was the first of its kind in the world to provide wi-fi based indoor navigation system without problems. Despite ‘myCoex’ only useable within Coex, over 150,000 users have downloaded the application. The research center plans on developing the necessary technology that will allow the application of such an app like ‘mCoex’ to large indoor spaces like Incheon International Airport, subway, shopping malls, and etc. In addition the addition of a social commerce service to ‘myCoex’ is being looked into which will be the marriage of navigation services and social commerce services. The KTNET KAIST research center will develop a wi-fi based indoor location recognition service platform that can be widely used and open it so that numerous other developers can develop personalized services. Han Dong Soo Head od Center commented, “The wi-fi based indoor location recognition technology is still found wanting in its accuracy, response time, and energy consumption efficiency making further research imperative in this particular field. The establishment of KTNET-KAIST research center has created a research friendly environment and KAIST will do its utmost to become the leader in the field”.

KAIST offers a new course on three-dimensional movies.
Registration for the class ends on February 18, 2010. The Graduate School of Culture Technology (GSCT) at KAIST created a special class entitled “Master Class for Three-Dimensional (3D) Film Production.” Applications for the class will be accepted by Thursday, February 18, 2010. The latest 3D movie, AVATAR, has become very popular upon its release in late 2009: An overwhelming visual and sensory experience provided by a 3D technology gave viewers real life feelings about a virtual reality built in the movie. People can almost reach out and touch an explosion, components of machines, and aliens appeared on the screen. “In response to growing interests in 3D movies, KAIST GSCT established a special session to teach students an overall process of 3D film production,” said Kwang-Yeon Won, Dean of GSTC. He also stressed that the 3D technology would serve as catalysts in developing the next generation of visual industry in the 21st century. “We have actively engaged in the development of 3D core technology and application contents. This class will be the first of our initiatives to launch a series of educational programs on 3D technology.” The class offers a complete road of 3D film production: an overview of stereography for 3D movies from planning, shooting, to post production. Many of film professionals (i.e., Director Yang-Hyun Choi and Shooting Director Byung-Il Kim), who are currently working in the field, will join the class so that students can have an opportunity to learn all ends of 3D film industry, both in terms of theoretical knowledge and practical work experience. The class is open to undergraduate/graduate students and to the public. KAIST to Join Forces with Northwestern School of Law in MIP Program
KAIST has agreed to collaborate in its Master of Intellectual Property (MIP) program with Northwestern University School of Law, the university authorities said on Wednesday (Nov. 11). KAIST President Nam-Pyo Suh and Northwestern Univ. School of Law Dean David Van Zandt signed a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of the certificate and degree programs of the Anglo-American law in February 2010, at the president"s office Wednesday. The latest agreement represents an expansion of the existing KAIST-Northwestern Executive LLM program that the two schools have successfully operated for the past eight years. It is aimed at boosting KAIST"s global intellectual property capabilities at a time when the strategic management of intellectual properties and capabilities to deal with international intellectual property disputes are gaining growing importance. The newly-established two-year, six-semester program is designed to offer a certificate program in the Anglo-American and intellectual property laws to make students better armed with legal knowledge in a competitive global environment. Northwestern University School of Law is regarded as one of the top law schools in the United States. American law schools are better positioned than any other institutions to prepare students to move from domestic to international practice in today"s complex global economy. KAIST Wins Official Membership of ERCIS
The Center for Software Policy Study of KAIST has recently become the 20th official member of the European Research Center for Information Systems (ERCIS) by signing an agreement with the organization, university authorities said on Thursday (Oct. 22). The ERCIS is a network of scientists who conduct cooperative research in the field of integrated information systems development and organizational design. The Center undertakes interdisciplinary research with the participation of computer scientists, business management experts and law scholars. KAIST will seek to activate exchange of professors, research fellows and graduate students with ERCIS members, as well as implementing credit exchange and dual degree programs. ERCIS, was first organized by the German state of North Rhine-Westfahlia, is currently managed by the University of Muenster, a global leader in the field of information systems and business administration. Joining the ERCIS are one university each from New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Liechtenstein, the United States, Switzerland, Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Britain, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Finland and Australia. KAIST"s Center for Software Policy Study is currently preparing for the establishment of a support system for developers of the mobile application software as part of the EUREKA project. Korea is playing a leading role in this project on the strength of its competitiveness in the mobile phone industry. EUREKA is a pan-European intergovernmental network for market-oriented, industrial R&D aimed at enhancing European competitiveness through its support to businesses, research centers and universities who carry out pan-European projects to develop innovative products, processes and services.

KAIST Dedicates Geocentrifuge Experiment Center
KAIST dedicated the KOCED Geo-Centrifuge Experiment Center for researches in monitoring natural disasters such as earthquake and embankment collapse through miniature simulation tests on Wednesday (April 9) after a two-year construction work. The experiment center is part of the Korea Construction Engineering Development Collaboratory Program (KOCED) which has been sponsored by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs to build an infrastructure for construction engineering researches at a national level. The ministry plans to build a total of 5 similar centers nationwide by the end of the year. On hand at the dedication ceremony were Jae-Choon Lee, President of the Korea Institute of Construction & Transportation Technology Evaluation and Planning, KAIST President Nam-Pyo Suh, and scores of experts and administration officials. The construction of the five-story building on an area of about 3,328 square meters cost 8.4 billion won (US$6.3 million). The center is expected to serve as a major laboratory in the field of geotechnical engineering. It is equipped with such state-of-the-art facilities as geocentrifuge, a useful tool for studying flow in unsaturated soil under well-controlled, repeatable conditions, a bidirectional shaking-table that can reproduce earthquake-like wave; and robots that can reproduce construction procedures by remote control. Geocentrifuge experiment allows detecting ground and structure motions easily and rapidly by simulation tests. Thus, it is widely used for various geotechnical engineering researches such as evaluation of seismic safety, soft ground movement, slope stability analysis, etc. The causes of the embankment collapse in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were also revealed by the geocentrifuge experiment. The geocentrifuge research facility is available for use by outside researchers, so scientists from other universities, research institutes and corporations can perform research and test their scientific and engineering hypotheses. The center is divided into two sections, experiment building and research building. The experiment building is composed of a geocentrifuge laboratory, model-making rooms, workshops, a geotechnical engineering laboratory and specimen storehouse, while the research building has a control room, a video conference room, an electronic library and research rooms.

KAIST Students Wins Gold Prize at Technical Idea Contest - Receive the gold prize at the 3rd High-Tech Daejeon Technical Idea Contest for Company Establishment- For the development of a new system to convert complex web page addresses to short and meaningful addresses Sang-Hoon Kim, Song-Hwa Chae and Dong-Hun Lee of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering won the gold prize at the prospective company establishment part in the 3rd High-Tech Daejeon Technical Idea Contest for Company Establishment on May 21 for their valuable development of ‘Web Page Address Clipping System’. So far, simplified web page addresses include special characters, which make the addresses long and complex. That is, the current address simplification service combines meaningless random words and numerals to create addresses when web page addresses are entered. In this case, the addresses are not easy to share with others and reuse several times since they are difficult to memorize. However, the ‘Web Page Address Clipping System’ shortens meaningless long addresses. In addition, the improved address simplification service will provide user’s own addresses, and statistics and ranking to clipping addresses frequently used. Based on this technology, Kim and Chae are now preparing to open a company called ‘URLClip’ under the auspice of Professor Tae-Yong Yang and Researcher In-Soo Kim, KAIST Entrepreneurship Center. They are also expanding their service areas onto clipping library for individual users, host name services for enterprises, etc. and developing tool bar, RSS service (RSS is an acronym of RDF (or Rich) Site Summary. It refers to a service that automatically and easily provides frequently updated contents such as news and blogs to users), etc. to improve users’ conveniences. URLClip (http://www.urlclip.net) is a next generation portal site, which is expected to provide a variety of individualized services based on Web Page Address Clipping Service and to be used by many enterprises as well as individual users who wish to enhance their access to useful contents. “Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Professor Sun-Won Park has offered lots of helps and supports, so I could decide to commercialize the developed technologies. The application of this technology to real life will allow further comfortable uses of internet to users,” Kim said. Narae Team received the best prize last April at the 2nd Pre-Star Venture Company-Opening Contest hosted by KAIST and Hanbat Univeristy, and the technology is pending a patent application. Prof. Bien Named IFSA Fuzzy Fellow
Prof. Bien Named IFSA Fuzzy Fellow Zeungnam Bien, a professor of Electrical Engineering, has been named a Fuzzy Fellow of the International Fuzzy Systems Association (IFSA). IFSA Fuzzy Fellows are named by the Fuzzy Fellows Committee based on the degree of technical contributions to the fuzzy set and its relevant fields and the degree of contribution for the establishment of fundaments in the field of advanced applied technologies development and fuzzy fields. IFSA has named total 36 fellows since its first one at the world congress in Prague in 1997. Professor Bien has worked as the chairman of the IFSA and will be officially named a Fuzzy Fellowship at the IFSA World Congress at Cancun, Mexico in June.
