Seven Faculty Members Elected to Join the National Academy of Engineering of Korea

NAEK, the most prestigious engineering society in Korea, elects new members with a minimum of 15 years of experience in engineering in academia and business every year. In 2022, 24 members were newly elected from academia, including four KAIST faculty members: Professor Doo-Hwan Bae from the SW Education Center, KAIST Provost and Executive Vice President Seung Seob Lee, Professor JaeYong Choung from the School of Business and Technology Management, and Professor Kyung Cheol Choi of the School of Electrical Engineering. In the business sector, 21 members were elected as members in business, including Vice Chairman Jong-hee Han of Samsung Electronics, CEO Hyeon-Mo Ku of KT, President Sang-Ryul Lee of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, President Kyo Won Jin of SK Hynix, CEO Eunkang Song of Capstone Partners, and Executive Vice President Se-hoon Kim of Hyundai Motor Company. Among the newly elected 40 associate members from academia, three KAIST professors were listed: Professor Sukyoung Ryu from the School of Computing, Professor Joongmyeon Bae from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Professor EunAe Cho from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Another 44 members were elected as associate members in business, including Vice Chairman Hag-Dong Kim of POSCO, President Seong-Hyeon Cho of Mando Corp, President Siyoung Choi of Samsung Electronics, President Joo Sun Choi of Samsung Display, and Chairman Byung-Gyu Chang of Krafton. NAEK evaluates candidates not only on their academic achievements, but on various other criteria including technological achievements, patents, the nurturing of talents, and contributions to the advancements of the industry. Candidates are then elected through written ballots by the members of NAEK. There are now 294 members and 360 associate members of NAEK.

KAIST Awarded the IPBC R&D Institution Team of the Year
KAIST was awarded the R&D Institution Team of the Year during the annual IPBC (Intellectual Property Business Congress) Asia 2019 held in Tokyo October 28-30. IPBC is a conference dedicated to IP value creation strategies hosted by IAM Media, a world’s leading IP business media platform. IPBC Asia 2019 recognized the institutions and businesses that employed innovative IP strategies and management to produce the greatest IP value in 11 categories covering automotive, electronics, healthcare and biotechnology, internet and software, R&D institutions, semiconductors, industrials, mobile and telecommunications, Asia IP deals, Asia teams, and Asia individuals. This year, KAIST was recognized as one of the most active patentees in the Asia-Pacific region by significantly increasing its IP value through licensing and tech transfers. Associate Vice President Kyung Cheol Choi of the Office of University-Industry Cooperation remarked, “We are so delighted to prove the strong research capacity of KAIST. This will help us accomplish our vision of being a leading university that creates global impact.”

KAIST Presents Innovations at CES 2019
Ten of the most innovative technologies spun off from KAIST made a debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019, the world’s largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition being held in Las Vegas from January 8 to 11. The KAIST booth at the CES featured technologies made by KAIST research teams and five startup companies including LiBEST, Memslux, and Green Power. In particular, the KAIST Alumni Association invited 33 aspiring alumni entrepreneurs selected from the KAIST Startup Competition to the show. At the exhibition, KAIST is presenting innovations in the fields of AI and Bio-IT convergence for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. These include real-time upscaling from Full HD to 4K UHD using AI deep learning-based convolutional neural networks (Professor Munchurl Kim, School of Electrical Engineering) and an AI conversation agent that responds to user’s emotions (Professor Soo-Young Lee, School of Electrical Engineering). Other technologies include optimal drug target identification by cancer cell type through drug response prediction to be used in personalized cancer treatments (Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho, Department of Bio and Brain Engineering), a nanofiber-based color changing gas sensor with greater sensitivity than conventional paper-based color changing sensors (Professor Il-Doo Kim, Department of Materials Science and Engineering), and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) for brain imaging and muscle fatigue measurement (Professor Hyeonmin Bae, School of Electrical Engineering). The KAIST booth also features startups founded by KAIST alumni including LiBEST with a flexible lithium polymer secondary cell optimized for smart wearable devices and Rempus with a high-performance lithium ion cell packaging technology for outstanding safety, high capacity, long life, and fast charging. Green Power and Smart Radar Systems are also joining the booth with a highly efficient and eco-friendly wireless charging system for electrical cars, and a 4D image radar sensor that detects 3D images and speed in real time for applications in self-driving cars, drones, and security systems respectively. Faculty-founded startup Memslux (CEO Jun-Bo Yoon, School of Electrical Engineering) is presenting a transparent surface light source solution for next-generation display devices. Associate Vice President of Office of University-Industry Cooperation Kyung Cheol Choi said, “I believe that universities should play a role in connecting technological innovations to business startups for creating value at a global level. In that sense, it is a great opportunity to present innovative technologies from KAIST and promote outstanding KAIST startups at CES 2019. Hopefully, this experience will lead to joint R&D, investment, cooperation, and international technology transfer contracts with leading companies from around the world.” Here are the five key technologies presented by KAIST at CES 2019.

Six Professors Recognized for the National R&D Excellence 100
Six KAIST professors were listed among the 2018 National R&D Excellence 100 announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT and Korea Institute of S&T Evaluation and Planning. Professor Il-Doo Kim from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was recognized for his research on developing source technology for manufacturing a highly sensitive gas sensor with low power consumption. His work was recognized as most excellent in the field of mechanics and materials. Additionally, Professor Ho Min Kim from the Graduate School of Medical Science & Engineering was listed as most excellent in the field of life and marine science for providing structural insights into the mechanism of proteins that regulates synapse development. Meanwhile, Professor Byong-Guk Park from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was listed as excellent in the field of mechanics and materials for his work on thermal spin current. In the field of energy and environment, Professor Jae Woo Lee from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering was listed as excellent for his work on CO₂ conversion to carbon materials. Last but not least, Professor Min H. Kim from the School of Computing and Professor Kyung Cheol Choi from the School of Electrical Engineering were recognized as being excellent in the field of information and electronics. Professor Kim was recognized for image processing technology that reconstructs interlaced high-dynamic range video while Professor Choi was lauded for realizing flexible displays on fabrics. A certificate from the Minister of Ministry of Science and ICT will be conferred to the scientists and their names will be listed on a special 2018 National R&D Excellence 100 plaque to celebrate their achievement. These six professors will be nominated for merits including the Order of Merit, the President’s commendation, and the Prime Minister’s commendation and given privileges during the process of new R&D project selection.
