Prototype technologies for world highest efficiency PDP lightening developed by Prof. Choi
- Core technologies that will solve power consumption problems in PDPs- To be unveiled as invited paper at conference by Society for Information Display in May A domestic research team has developed prototype technologies for high efficiency lightening that can significantly improve the power consumption of Plasma Display Panels (PDP). A team headed by Kyung Cheol Choi, a professor of Electrical & Computer Science in KAiST (President Nam-Pyo Suh), has developed new cell structures and driving methods of PDP, typical digital television, which can increase the luminous efficacy of PDP four times and are to be unveiled at the conference by the Society for Information Display (SID) as an invited paper. Best Prize to Sungwook Choi and Gold Prize to Heeseok Han at Paper Contest Best Prize to Sungwook Choi and Gold Prize to Heeseok Han at Fairchild Korea Graduate Student Paper Contest Sungwook Choi and Heeseok Han, both in doctorate course at KAIST Department of Electrical Engineering, won best prize and gold prize respectively at the 1st Fairchild Korea Graduate Student Paper Contest. The title of Choi’s paper is ‘Cost Effective Multi-Level Single Sustaining Driver for Plasma Display Panel with Dual Energy Recovery Path’. And the title of Han’s paper is ‘Digital Control IC for Electronic Ballast using Mixed Mode Excitation’. Choi’s paper proposes a new driver that can avoid the problems of IGBT, a power switch used at PDP driving circuit, gaining attention as next-generation display, for cost-reduction. Choi showed his feeling of pleasure by saying, “I’m very pleased that my paper can contribute to PDP popularization and development of power switch for PDP through cost-reduction. I’d like to acknowledge Professor Kunwoo Moon, who has instructed me with persistence and interest at all times.” Meanwhile, total 56 papers from 23 universities are applied for the contest, and total 11 papers were awarded after two rounds of examination in terms of novelty, creativeness, technical difficulties, etc. Awardees will be exempted from documentation test and are eligible for additive points when they hope to join Fairchild Korea.

Professor Chung-Seok Chang named as APS Fellow
Professor Chung-Seok Chang named as APS Fellow - Honorable position offered only to an extremely small number of members within 0.5% of APS - Recognized for his leading and creative contribution to Plasma conveyance theory, Electromagnetic waves heating theory and leadership in the research field of large-scaled computer simulation Professor Chung-Seok Chang (Department of Physics) was named as a fellow of the American Physics Society (APS), world-renowned society in the physics filed. The fellow of the APS is considered as a position of great honor among scholars in the field of Physics since only a small number of regular members within 0.5% of the APS can become the fellows. Professor Chang was recognized for his leading and creative contribution to the fields of Plasma conveyance theory, Electromagnetic waves heating theory and leadership in the research field of large-scaled computer simulation, which made him named as APS fellow. Professor Chang has been invited several times to the Main Policy Committee of the U.S. Department of Energy and was a member of On-site Review Committee on the theoretical research activities of the U.S. major state-run institutes. Due to many world-recognized research results carried out with KAIST students, he has been invited several times for lecture to the conference of the APS as well as large-scaled international academic conferences. As a result, KAIST doctorates of Computational Physics from his laboratory are recognized globally for their excellence in the field of nuclear fusion. Besides, Professor Chang was assigned as the Chief General of the super-sized Computational Theory Research Group last year, to which the U.S Department of Energy will invest 6 million dollars of research fund for three years, and manages the complex theory research group that transcribes and reproduces the properties of nuclear fusion plasma by using large-scaled parallel computers with its head quarter in the U.S. Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. This research group consists of greatest U.S. scholars in the fields of Physics, Mathematics, and Computation, belonging to 14 research-education institutes such as Princeton University, Colombia University, MIT, University of California Engineering College, California State University, Rutgers University, New-York University, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Oak Ridge National Lab, Berkeley National Laboratories, etc., thereby gathering worldwide

KAIST tech-clinic center opens
- Consists of total 124 staffs including KAIST professors, experts from state-run institutes in Daedeok Innopolis, etc. - Introduce the patient treatment system of general hospitals and provide the services of diagnosis, treatment, and later management of small and medium-sized venture enterprises A tech-clinic center is opened in KAIST to solve technical problems of enterprises in Daedeok Innopolis. KAIST (President Nam Pyo Suh) and Daedeok Innopolis (President&CEO In Chul Park) held the opening ceremony of ‘Daedeok Innopolis-designated KAIST tech-clinic center’ at the High-tech Venture Hall in KAIST, 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 28. KAIST tech-clinic center consists of total 124 staffs including KAIST professors and researchers, experts from state-run institutes in Daedeok Innopolis, etc. The staffs will take charge of general diagnosis and treatment in the fields of Information Communication, BioTechnologies, Nano-Technologies, Environmental Engineering, Management, Design, and so on. The tech-clinic center, upon the request by small and medium-sized enterprises, will dispatch the staffs in the corresponding field to check the state of the enterprises and provide assistance to solve problems in technology development and researches. The center plans to transfer technologies that enterprises need and solve long-term tasks through joint/ entrusted researches. The center will also perform treatments in the fields of management, law, and accounting of enterprises in association with company founding and management consultation project, which is being promoted by Daedeok Innopolis. Unlike the existing consulting institutes that put a high value on consultation, the center is featured with its distinguished way of running that it will analyze the causes of problems, find fundamental solutions, and perform even later management. An official from KAIST said, “Considering various circumstances, it’s not easy for individual enterprises to find suitable experts in the corresponding fields and request proper solutions to settle their problems. That’s the reason why KAIST has promoted this project. KAIST hopes many enterprises in Daedeok Innopolis based on the cutting-edge technologies will gain substantial assistance from this center.” An official from Daedeok Innopolis said, “In order to provide practical supports, the treatment will be carried out in preliminary/ routine/ expert phases. Also, it is planned to strengthen regular omnidirectional support services for enterprises in association with the internet web call center, etc.”

Professor Sejin Kwon develops thruster for small satellite
- World’s first application of high-performance liquid propellant to small satellite thruster - Show about four times higher thrust performance than the cold gas thruster of University of Surrey, the state-of-the-art technology in the field of small satellite - Expect a considerable contribution to the extension of the lifespan and mission range of small satellites The team of Professor Sejin Kwon (Department of Aerospace Engineering in KAIST/ President Nam Pyo Suh) and Space Solution Inc. (President Jaehun Lee) have jointly developed a micro thruster for small satellite motion-control. Kwon"s team has succeeded in developing an integrated thruster which can be mounted on a satellite by integrating catalyst reactor and propellant-supplying system, which are the core technologies of small satellite thruster system. For the first time in the world, Kwon’s team employs a high-performance liquid propellant to the thruster. In the thruster, liquid-state hydrogen peroxide is dissolved into vapor and oxygen at the catalytic layer to emit a huge amount of heat. And, the emitted heat is converted into the kinetic energy of the gas to produce a propulsive force. This thruster can perform the motion-control of a several tens-kilogram satellite with a propulsive force of less than one Newton and shows about four times higher thrust performance than the cold gas thruster of University of Surrey, who possesses the state-of-the-art technologies in the field of small satellites. Professor Kwon said, “Although University of Surrey has also tried to develop a similar system, it’s not yet solved the problem on catalytic reactor bed. I expect this thruster will considerably contribute to the extension of the lifespan and mission range of scientific small satellites. Also, this thruster can be employed for the attitude control of the upper end of the launch vehicle, which is now being developed by the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).” <Thruster module for small satellite application>
