Computer Security Guru Ahn to Become Chair Professor at KAIST
Chul-Soo Ahn, founder of AhnLab Inc., Korea"s largest computer security company, will become a chair professor of KAIST, university authorities said on Monday (April 7). Ahn, 46, who is currently taking an executive education course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, will start teaching computer science students this fall. In 1988 when he was a doctorate student at the Medical School of Seoul National University, Ahn developed a computer virus vaccine program and created a sensation in the fledgling computer security market. In 1995, he founded AhnLab and served as CEO for ten years. In 2005, he stepped down as CEO of AhnLab and left for the U.S. Currently, he is serving as chairman of the board of directors of AhnLab. University authorities said that KAIST decided to appoint Ahn as a chair professor in recognition of his profound knowledge in computer technology as well as extensive experiences in corporate management .

KAIST Retains Top Spot in Systems and Software Engineering
For two consecutive years, KAIST, Korea"s top science and technology university, topped the list of the world"s most published institutions in the field of systems and software engineering, according to a survey conducted by the Journal of Systems and Software. The survey assessed systems and software engineering scholars and institutions by the number of papers they published in six major journals of the field from 2001 to 2005. Geographically, seven of the top 15 institutions are from the Asia-Pacific region, six from the United States and two from Europe. In previous assessments, institutions from the Americas took the lion"s share. KAIST topped the list of 15 in 2006 and again in 2007. The runner-up for 2007 is China"s National Chiao Tung University. Norway"s Simula Research Laboratory and Korea"s Seoul National University were ranked third and fourth, respectively. Rounding up the top ten list are Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Iowa State University, and University of Texas at Dallas, all from the United States; and City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Two KAIST professors, Chung Chin-Wan and Kim Myoung-Ho, were among the top ten most published scholars. Chung"s papers were mostly about his researches in database, web, and multimedia, while Kim"s researches concerned database systems and distributed information processing. The Journal of Systems and Software, a computer science journal specializing in the software systems, is published by Elsevier, the Dutch-based world"s largest publisher of medical and scientific literature.

Pop Singer Kim Makes Second Donation to KAIST
Popular singer Kim Jang-Hoon donated 50 million won to KAIST for the development of Korea"s prestigious S&T university on Thursday, Feb. 14. It was the singer"s second gift to KAIST in a year. Kim donated the same amount of money in March 2007 to express his gratitude to Professor Oh Jun-Ho and his research team for allowing him to use HUBO, South Korea"s first humanoid robot, for his concerts in 2006. In a brief donation ceremony at the KAIST president"s office, Kim said he hoped he would be of any help in the development of science in Korea.

Prof. Lee Listed on Marquis Who's Who
Professor Lee Ji-hyun of the Graduate School of Culture Technology at KAIST was registered to Marquis Who"s Who, known as one of the world"s three leading biographical dictionaries. Prof. Lee"s biography was published in the 25th anniversary edition of "Marquis Who"s Who in the World 2008." Lee"s research interests are the color and culture, computer-supported collaborative design, creative design, evolutionary systems in design, formal models of design process, representation and reasoning in design and visualization for design information. Lee has published about 30 papers in science journals and for scholastic conferences. She is also a participating professor at KAIST Institute for Entertainment Engineering. Before joining KAIST in 2007, she was an assistant professor at the Department of Digital Media Design and Graduate School of Computational Design, the National Yunlin University of Science & Technology (NYUST) in Taiwan starting from 2002. She received her Ph.D. from the School of Architecture (Computational Design) at Carnegie Mellon University in 2002. She graduated from the Department of Housing & Interior Design at Yonsei University in Seoul in 1991 and received her M.S. from the same university in 1993.

KAIST Names Three Distinguished Professors
KAIST Names Three Distinguished Professors - Three professors having achieved world’s distinguished research and education performances- Special incentives and non full-time position after retirement age to be offered KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) has named three Distinguished Professors, the most honorable positions in KAIST, for the first time in its history. The three professors are Choong-Ki Kim, Dep. of Computer Science, Sang-Yup Lee, Dep. of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Kee-Joo Chang, Dep. of Physics. Professor Kim has made significant contributions to the advancement of Korea’s semiconductor field. He developed and put into a practical use ‘CCD Imaging Element’, a core technology in the multimedia era and the most widely used imaging sensor, for the first time in the world. He also promoted special education programs with industrial bodies such as Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor, etc. to improve industry-academy cooperation programs of KAIST. In recent years, he is showing passionate activities for the development of KAIST, such as genius education, interdisciplinary education by the Graduate School of Culture Technology, and experiment education for undergraduate students. He received Hoam Prize in 1993 and the Order of Civil Merit Moran Medal in 1997, and is an IEEE fellow and the former Vice-president of KAIST. Professor Lee has showed outstanding performances in the field of Metabolic Engineering. He discovered the genome sequences of bacteria for the first time in the world and published a paper regarding his discovery applied to metabolic engineering technologies at Nature Biotechnology in 2004. He also published a 78-page paper, evaluated as the bible of prteomics, at the 70 years long Microbiology and Molecular Biology Review (MMBR). His research performances are 187 domestic and international papers, 203 patent applications, Young Scientist Award, 212 invited lectures from home and abroad, etc. Professor Chang has published about 200 papers in the field of Sold-State Physics and presented diverse theory models regarding semiconductor materials, his major research fields, at review articles, textbooks, academic conferences, etc. Particularly, he found out the essences of DX defects in GaAs semiconductors, a problem that had remained unsolved more than 10 years, and his paper on this has been cited so far more than 500 times. Professor Chang, named as one of the Nation’s Great Scholars in 2005, has 15 papers as cited more than 100 times and records the number of citation indexed by SCI at 4,847, third place among all scientists in Korea. Distinguished Professors are the most honorable positions in KAIST, and only professors achieving world’s distinguished research and education performances can be Distinguished Professors. Being Distinguished Professors demands recommendations from President, Vice-president, Deans of College, and Department Heads and favorable evaluations by domestic and overseas professionals. Distinguished Professors will be offered special incentives and appointed as non full-time faculty even after their full retirement age. KAIST will hire outstanding human resources in highly promising research fields through its novice systems including Distinguished Professors System, etc. to build and retain world’s best faculty.

Singer Janghoon Kim Donates Development Fund to KAIST - Generously donates part of earnings from his concert where HUBO performed for development of science - Opportunity for activation of science culture through encounter between science and culture Singer Janghoon Kim donated 50 million won from his concert earnings for KAIST development fund. Singer Kim visited KAIST on January 16 (Tue) and donated the development fund at the joint lecture room in KAIST Mechanical Engineering B/D. Singer Kim had a concert at the end of the last year where he performed with ‘HUBO’ and ‘Albert HUBO’, human-like robots of KAIST HUBO center. Singer Kim made a donation to express his gratitude to KAIST Professor Joonho Oh and his research team, who assisted his concert actively to allow HUBO to join the concert in spite of technical difficulties and research obstacles. “Although HUBO has performed various activities so far, it is the first time to make a successful performance with a singer on a stage. Honestly, I hesitated a lot to allow HUBO to join Kim’s concert due to safety problems etc., but I was so impressed by Kim’s interest and passion for science, and thus decided HUBO’s joining the concert. This is the first case how robots can exchange with public cultures. I wish this case will be a momentum to activate science culture and make people feel closer to science,” Professor Oh said. The donation will be spent partly as KAIST development fund (20 million won) and partly on the publicity of science and technology via HUBO (30 million won).

Retirement of Professor Jung-Woong Ra
Retirement of Professor Jung-Woong Ra The first professor of KAIST Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department Jung-Woon Ra, who is also the former president of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), retired. Professor Ra joined KAIST as professor in 1971, the year of KAIST foundation, and established the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has significantly contributed to the development of the department and is recognized for his sincere devotion to the rapid growth of GIST into a specialized research-oriented university as the head of GIST Foundation Committee and the third president of GIST. For the past 35 years in KAIST, Professor Ra has educated 37 Ph.Ds and 90 masters, and presented 113 papers in domestic and world renowned journals and 93 academic papers. Particularly, Professor Ra, world-class scholar in the field of electromagnetic wave utilization and application, invented ‘successive electromagnetic wave ground penetrating radar’, with which he discovered the fourth tunnel made by North Korean Military Forces in 1989. In recognition of his contribution to manpower education and development of science and technology, he won Moran medal of Order of Civil Merit in 1999 and was awarded as a man of merit for electromagnetic wave development in 2005. Retirement ceremony for Professor Jung was held at Dream Hall in ChungMoonSoul building last Friday, September 29, and Professor Jung was named as Emeritus Professor at the ceremony.

Imaging technology expert from Hollywood becomes KAIST professor
Imaging technology expert from Hollywood becomes KAIST professor A U.S. imaging technology expert from Hollywood was appointed as KAIST professor. KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) announced on September 18 that world-famous imaging technology expert Joonyong Noh, who deals with special effects at Hollywood, was appointed as assistant professor of Graduate School of Culture Technology. Professor Noh obtained Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and has been working at Rhythm & Hues, one of the world top three independent productions. He has developed special effects of 23 pieces of Hollywood films for the past three years and took charge of special effects of movies ‘Garfield’, ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King’, etc. which were released worldwide. His recent work is the film ‘Superman Returns’. In this film, Professor Noh skillfully expressed a scene of superman flying into a ship with virtual reality using simulation. Professor Noh also has shown great achievements in the fields of face animation, algorithm-based scenery generation, non-rigid body and fluid dynamics simulation. “I’ve performed various imaging works with advanced science and technology and arts combined in them at Hollywood. Based on such experiences, I will develop advanced imaging technologies along with KAIST students,” Professor Noh remarked his intention.

KAIST tech-clinic center opens
- Consists of total 124 staffs including KAIST professors, experts from state-run institutes in Daedeok Innopolis, etc. - Introduce the patient treatment system of general hospitals and provide the services of diagnosis, treatment, and later management of small and medium-sized venture enterprises A tech-clinic center is opened in KAIST to solve technical problems of enterprises in Daedeok Innopolis. KAIST (President Nam Pyo Suh) and Daedeok Innopolis (President&CEO In Chul Park) held the opening ceremony of ‘Daedeok Innopolis-designated KAIST tech-clinic center’ at the High-tech Venture Hall in KAIST, 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 28. KAIST tech-clinic center consists of total 124 staffs including KAIST professors and researchers, experts from state-run institutes in Daedeok Innopolis, etc. The staffs will take charge of general diagnosis and treatment in the fields of Information Communication, BioTechnologies, Nano-Technologies, Environmental Engineering, Management, Design, and so on. The tech-clinic center, upon the request by small and medium-sized enterprises, will dispatch the staffs in the corresponding field to check the state of the enterprises and provide assistance to solve problems in technology development and researches. The center plans to transfer technologies that enterprises need and solve long-term tasks through joint/ entrusted researches. The center will also perform treatments in the fields of management, law, and accounting of enterprises in association with company founding and management consultation project, which is being promoted by Daedeok Innopolis. Unlike the existing consulting institutes that put a high value on consultation, the center is featured with its distinguished way of running that it will analyze the causes of problems, find fundamental solutions, and perform even later management. An official from KAIST said, “Considering various circumstances, it’s not easy for individual enterprises to find suitable experts in the corresponding fields and request proper solutions to settle their problems. That’s the reason why KAIST has promoted this project. KAIST hopes many enterprises in Daedeok Innopolis based on the cutting-edge technologies will gain substantial assistance from this center.” An official from Daedeok Innopolis said, “In order to provide practical supports, the treatment will be carried out in preliminary/ routine/ expert phases. Also, it is planned to strengthen regular omnidirectional support services for enterprises in association with the internet web call center, etc.”

Bently Pressurized Bearing Company donates 1 million dollars to KAIST to establish a new chair professorship
KAIST has announced that it recently received an endowment of 1 million US dollars from an American company, Bently Pressurized Bearing Co., earmarked to establish a chair professorship, and appointed Professor Jong Hyun Kim of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering Department as Donald E. Bently and Agnes Muszynska Endowed Chair Professor. Professor Kim is a world-renowned expert in thermal and fluids sciences applied to energy systems and an authority on their applications to rotating machinery and nuclear safety analysis. He did his research in these areas at EPRI, GE, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Penn State University. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and of American Nuclear Society, and is currently Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Transport Phenomena. Bently Pressurized Bearing Co. (BPB) is pioneering fully lubricated, pressurized bearing to improve energy efficiency in rotating machinery. Mr. Donald E. Bently, Chairman and CEO of BPB, is an international authority on vibration monitoring and diagnostics of rotating machinery, published widely on these topics and holds patents. A philanthropist deeply interested in technology and science education, Mr. Bently made generous donations to a number of universities. He received numerous honors and awards, including those from ASME, the Pacific Center of Thermal-Fluids Engineering, University of Iowa, and received Nevada’s Outstanding Inventor Award. Dr. Muszynska is a Fellow of ASME. Professor Kim said, “I am pleased that KAIST received this endowment, which can be interpreted as an international recognition for the research standard of KAIST. The chair named after the two prominent engineers means a lot to me, as they are familiar with my research activities. I feel particularly honored because the endowment came from overseas.” KAIST has raised its eyesight to become a global leader in technology and science and recently lured a Nobel Laureate from Stanford University, Dr. Robert Laughlin, to head the institute.
