KAIST and Hynix Semiconductor Jointly Foster Manpower
KAIST and Hynix Semiconductor Jointly Foster Manpower - Joint running of industry-academy programs for excellent semiconductor manpower training - Regular mutual manpower exchange for on-site education and research KAIST Department of Raw Material Science and Engineering and Hynix Semiconductor concluded an agreement to manage a ‘joint industry-academy business group’, Wednesday, December 6. The both bodies reached an agreement to jointly promote the first step of ‘the excellent semiconductor manpower training program’ for 4 years beginning 2007. KAIST plans to foster creative and excellent semiconductor manpower possessing both of theories and technologies through research topics and lectures that reflect Hynix Semiconductor’s necessities, and will promote regular manpower exchanges with Hynix Semiconductor to enhance trainees’ on-site adaptabilities. Hynix Semiconductor will actively participate in the researches and support the expenses for research and education and high-cost equipment. Furthermore, Hynix Semiconductors will dispatch its researchers to KAIST as adjunct professors to educate doctorate students, who join the researches, and assist on-site education.

KAIST hosts Korea-China High-tech Expo
KAIST hosts Korea-China High-tech Expo - Three days from Tuesday, December 12 at Beijing International Convention Center in China - 30 Korean companies and 40 Chinese companies will participate and exhibit cutting-edge technologies KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) will host ‘Korea-China High-Tech EXPO 2006’ with Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) at Beijing International Convention Center in China for three days from Tuesday, December 12. ‘Korea-China High-Tech EXPO’ is an event which has taken place annually since the conclusion of the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) for the enhancement of international joint researches and mutual exchanges between KAIST and Tsinghua University in the year of 2002 and faces the 4th time this year. The event began for the activation of technical exchanges between top venture enterprises of the both countries and the enhancement of academic exchanges between top technical universities of the both countries and now has grown into a business stage for the enhancement of competitiveness of venture enterprises and the creation of new markets. In the event, 30 companies, including Golfzon Co,. Ltd. etc., and 4 institutes, including KAIST Human-Friendly Welfare Robot System Engineering Research Center, etc., from Korea and 40 companies from China will participate and exhibit their cutting-edge technologies. The participants have been selected with the focus on technologies requested by China-side, and each participant will be provided with opportunities of detailed consultation with buyers from ten companies of China. During the event, subsidiary events like excellent technology exhibition, Korea-China technical business forum, special introductions of goods by Mosin Biotech, Inc. and Daeduk Lab Inc., etc. will take place.

Final competition of 'UFC' contest
Final competition of ‘UFC’ contest Joint university team D-M2 won first prize The final winner of ‘the 2nd Ubiquitous Fashionable Computer (UFC) contest‘, co-hosted by KAIST and the Korean Society for Next-Generation Computing (KSNGC), was determined. At the final competition of November 17 among 9 qualified teams, the first prize went to D-M2, composed of students from Seokyeong University, Kookmin University, Hongik University, and Sungshin Women’s University. D-M2 manufactured a work utilizing a user’s motion information by applying motion capture technologies to UFC. Particularly, the work gained a high score at the item of the functional perfection by controlling the robot according to a user’s motion. The gold prize went to the smart jacket by Jjik-eo-cha-ki (Kwangwoon University and Duksung Women’s University). The smart jacket is embedded with an intelligent clothes function in terms of checking a user’s status in a real-time basis and delivering it to a doctor, etc. The silver and bronze prizes went to Samsung Software Membership (SSM) and Hanse University, respectively. SSM manufactured a training suit with sensors for grasping the movement of each articulation of a user built-in, and Hanse University developed a system enabling blinders to get a voice service of general documents or books regardless of time and place. The participants composed of university students or graduate students have passed the severe qualifying contest through the examination of written plan and presentation of last April and manufactured creative works that realize the fusion of IT technologies and fashion. At the contest, that fact that all winners of the first, gold, and silver prizes were the members of SSM gained more attention. UFC is a new field that pursuits the enhancement of computer technologies and the creation of fashion simultaneously by fusing IT technologies and fashions. UFC is a one-step advanced field of the existing wearable computer and an important cutting-edge field that leads a computer industry in the era of ubiquitous. “The level of the works exhibited was higher than I’d expected and the cooperation between the departments of Closing Textile and Electronics appeared to be so positive, which made me expect more brilliant future of the next-generation computing industry,” said Hoijoon You, Co-chairman of the contest and professor of the department of Electrical Engineering.

Professor Ikho Song Wins Academic Award of Haedong Information & Communication Professor Ikho Song (Division of Electrical Engineering) won an academic award of Haedong Information & Communication at a regular meeting of Korean Institute of Communication Sciences 2006. The award was given to Professor Song in recognition of his presenting excellent papers at many renowned domestic and global academic journals and his substantial contribution to the development of the information & communication field. Meanwhile, Hyungmoon Kwon, a doctorate student under Professor Song’s supervisory, also won an award of excellent paper at the meeting.

Youngseok Son and Yongjoon Chun won a prize of Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister Youngseok Son and Yongjoon Chun, doctorate students at circuit design and system application lab of Electrical Engineering Division, won a prize of Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister (Silver prize) at the 7th Semiconductor Design Contest hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Their work exhibited at the contest is ‘a driving circuit for the improvement of image quality of AMOLED display’. AMOLED display is gaining attention as a next-generation display for its numberless advantages compared to AMLCD and PDP, however, problems over the image quality and lifespan of the display have disturbed the substantial development. Their work verified its electrical features by proposing and designing the driving method and circuit for the improvement of the image quality and lifespan of AMOLED display. The announced driving method was named ‘Transient Cancellation Feedback (FCF)’ and its concept was published in SID 2006. Their work was evaluated to overcome the limitation of the existing driving methods by providing an intrinsic Active Matrix structure, different from the existing driving methods. It is also evaluated to strikingly enhance the speed and accuracy of data current driving through TCF driving. It is expected to significantly enhance the image quality and lifespan of AMOLED displays by applying TCF driving.

Jinkon Chung won gold prize at 'Intel student paper contest'
Jinkon Chung won gold prize at ‘Intel student paper contest’ Jinkon Chung, doctorate student at the Division of Electrical Engineering under Professor Yonghoon Lee’s supervisory, won the gold prize at ‘the student paper contest 2006’ organized by Intel Korea. Chung proposed an important key for the next-generation mobile communication technologies at his paper entitled with ‘Regularized channel diagonalization for multi-user MIMO downlink using a modified MMSE criterion’. That is a new linear processing algorithm showing superior performances to the existing ZF-based or MMSC-based methods under the circumference of multi-user MIMO, which is the most spotlighted field in the recent next-generation mobile communication technologies, which was highly evaluated in the contest. Meanwhile, Howon Lee and Sunghoon Lim, Division of Electrical Engineering, also won bronze prizes.

Gold prize for Sungkoo Yeo and silver prize for Youngsik Kim at ‘Samsung Electrics paper contest’ Sungkoo Yeo, doctorate student at the division of Electrical Engineering, and Youngsik Kim, doctorate students at the division of Mechanical Engineering, won gold and silver prizes respectively at ‘the 2nd Inside edge paper contest’ organized by Samsung Electronics. Yeo, under the supervisory of Professor Youngse Kwon, won the glory of gold prize in recognition of his highly evaluated researches in the fields of silicon-based micro mold manufacturing technologies and fine shaping technologies revealed by his paper of ‘"Fabrication of Microlens array Using PDMS Replica Molding and Oxidized Porous Silicon Bulk Micromachining’. Kim, under the supervisory of Professor Seungwoo Kim, also won the silver prize for his research performances over the thickness pattern measuring technologies of transparent thin film coated on the pattern of an opaque metal in the field of optical technology unveiled by his paper of "Dispersive white-light interferometry for in-line inspection of thin-film layers on patterned structures". Inside Edge paper contest is an academic paper contest organized by Samsung Electronics to reveal the fresh ideas and potential technologies of the young talented.

KAIST Chong-Moon Lee Library Opens
KAIST Chong-Moon Lee Library Opens Jong-Moon Lee Library, management education library for scientists possessing the biggest amount of entrepreneurship data in Asia, opens in KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) on Thursday, November 9, 2006. Jong-Moon Lee Library was planned when Jong-Moon Lee, Chairman of AmBex, donated 2 million dollar to KAIST and founded Entrepreneurship Research Center at KAIST in 2004. Chairman Lee emphasized on the necessity of management education for scientists of advanced technology-based venture companies and set the management plan for Jong-Moon Lee Library securing the biggest amount of Entrepreneurship data in Asia. Jong-Moon Lee Library possesses books for inspiring entrepreneurship, including ▲ books regarding how to prepare and evaluate business plans that support the realization of business ideas such as venture company founding, etc. ▲ administrative books necessary for company management such as leadership and finance, accounting, etc. ▲ economic books that foster reader’s insight over economy and society. The number of books is about 4,900 and various journals including Harvard Business Review are also provided. KAIST Entrepreneurship Research Center (President Tae-Yong Yang) is now carrying out ▲ the management of entrepreneurship library for Engineering students and businessmen ▲ programs for entrepreneurship education and venture-company founding ▲aid for business plan forums and academic conferences. It benchmarks Stanford Technology Venture Program (STVP) of Stanford University, which is evaluated the most excellent program in researches and realization of entrepreneurship, and manages education programs for scientific manpower with international managing minds on the basis of world’s best capabilities in scientific researches and education of KAIST. President Yang explained about the management plan by saying, “Following Chairman Jong-Moon Lee’s intention, the center will educate entrepreneurship to engineering students and properly diagnose initial values of excellent technologies, thereby making venture companies flourish.”

Sungil Chung listed in Who's Who following last year
Sungil Chung listed in Who’s Who following last year Sungil Chung, senior researcher of KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center (STRC), is listed in the international biographical dictionary Marquis Who"s Who’s Who’s Who in the America Edition 2007 following last year. He is also listed in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders. Ph.D. Chung majored in Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) at Texas A&M University and worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for a research in the field of aerospace vehicle-related thermal control. He has worked at KAIST STRC as senior researcher from September this year. He has won an Innovation and Creativity Prize Paper Award from the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2004.

KAIST President's Advisory Council starts to operate
KAIST President’s Advisory Council starts to operate Composed of distinguished experts (six from abroad and seven from home) in the fields of industry, academy, and research To suppose development plan, provide political advices, and help fund-raising Consultation by distinguished experts from home and abroad starts to make KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) one of world’s top technology and science universities. KAIST held the first meeting of KAIST President’s Advisory Council (PAC), which has been composed for consultation over KAIST development plan (draft), at KAIST conference room, Wednesday, November 8, 2006. At the meeting, general introduction of KAIST and presentation of business plan by each college were made, and KAIST Education Innovation Center’s undergraduate education innovation plan (draft) and research plan by each of five KAIST institutes were explained. At the meeting, the PAC members discussed items to be carried out for the development plan (draft) and advised substantial measures to achieve the goals. After the meeting, the PAC members visited two laboratories to observe research sites. KAIST PAC is composed of celebrities possessing rich global management experiences at the top of the fields of industry, academy, and research from home and abroad and will perform various substantial roles such as suggesting development plans, providing political advices, and assisting fund-raising to advance KAIST into one of the world’s top 10 universities. The overseas members of KAIST PAC are Neil Pappalardo, Chairman of MEDITECH, Hock Tan, Chairman of Technology Inc., Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, President of Japanese Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and former president of Tokyo University, John Holzrichter, President of Fannie and John Hertz Foundation, Jongmoon Lee, Chairman of AmBex Inc., and Byungjoon Park, CEO of Bureau Veritas CPS. And, the domestic members of KAIST PAC are Kyesik Min, Vice-chairman of Hyundai Heavy Industries, Heekuk Lee, President of LG Electronics, Youngchul Hong, Chairman of KISWIRE, Heebum Lee, Chairman of Korean International Trade Association, Yoonwoo Lee, Vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics, Dongjin Kim, Vice-chairman of Hyundai Motors, Youngsik Myung, President of GS CALTEX.
