Welcoming the Class of 2014
“The four years from today will go quickly, and I urge you to make the most of your time in KAIST, a great educational and research institution where you will explore the frontiers of science and technology and take part in the creation of new knowledge,” President Kang told the freshmen at the convocation ceremony.
Freshmen Convocation for the Class of 2014 took place on March 3, 2014 at the auditorium on the main campus. Members of the KAIST community, along with hundreds of parents and guests, welcomed the incoming 800 freshmen, celebrating the beginning of their four-year college life.
Kwang-Joon Ahn, a graduate of the Korea Science Academy, and Ha-Rim Jin, a graduate of Daegu Il Science High School, were representatives of the incoming students, and they took the “Class of 2014 Pledge,” a commitment to uphold KAIST’s core values, which is "creativity and challenge (endeavoring spirit)," and to pursue intellectual passion and discovery.
President Steve Kang delivered congratulatory remarks, encouraging students to use their opportunities to the fullest while at KAIST to broaden their knowledge and experience. He also stressed the following four important principles they should cultivate to become the leaders of tomorrow: be grateful, excel in their field, keep open minds about what the globalized world would bring, and never give up on their dreams and belief.
President Kang said:
“Probably, many of you, the graduates of the best high schools in Korea, will find KAIST a tougher place to be in than you imagined. But challenges, particularly intellectual challenges, should be viewed as an opportunity to grow. It is ok to fail. In fact, without risking failures, there won’t be a meaningful growth because the real growth comes from overcoming challenges.”
“You can’t avoid failing in the course of your college life, but your perseverance to do it over will allow you to develop the skills and passion needed to become a leader who will contribute to the local community, as well as to the betterment of humanity.”
The KAIST Alumni Scholarship Foundation presented a scholarship of USD 3,700 to 24 freshmen.
The convocation ended with music performances by members of the student clubs at KAIST.

The 5th KAIST President's Advisory Council Held
The 5th KAIST President’s Advisory Council (PAC) was held on October 13 at KAIST. At PAC, President Suh reported important present conditions and achievements of KAIST and introduced the ‘KAIST Vision 2025’ to members of the council which includes top national and international professionals of the Industry-University-Institute collaboration.
Additionally, six latest research assignments of KAIST were selected and presented to the PAC. President Suh also presented the Freshman Design Course, Renaissance Ph.D. Program, KAIST-KUSTAR Cooperation Program, and the visions of Neil Pappalardo Medical Center and received advice from the council.
Through PAC, KAIST receives various strategic advices to develop KAIST into a global science and technology university, direct and indirect support on the KAIST development fund collection, and support to create, maintain and develop cooperation relationships with national and international distinguished institutes linked to advisory council members.
International PAC council members include Donald C. W. Kim, CEO of AMKOR A&E; Neil Pappalardo, former MEDITECH CEO; John R. Holzrichter, President of the Fannie and John Hertz Foundation; Papken Der Torossian, CEO of Vistec Semiconductor Systems Group; Adnan Akay, Vice President of Bilkent University; Arden Bement, Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF); Tod Laursen, President of KUSTAR in the UAE; Lars Pallesen, President of the Technical University of Denmark and Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, former President of the University of Tokyo.
National PAC council members include Kim Woo Sik, President of the Creativity Engineering Institute; Jin Hyun Kim, Chairman of the Committee for the Establishment of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History; Myung Ja Kim, President of the Green Korea 21 Forum; Lee Hee Gook, President of LG Siltron; Lyu keun Chul, Professor of Bauman Moscow State Technical University; Bo-Young Kang, President of Andong Medical Group; Kwon Oh-Gap, former Vice Minister of Science and Technology; Sang chun Lee, President of Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials; and Bae Soo Hoon, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea.

Beginning of First Semester for Academic Year 2010
Welcome Ceremony for Freshmen Held at KAIST on February 1st, 2010
KAIST held a welcome ceremony for freshmen on February 1st, 2010 at an auditorium with an attendance of parents and guests. A total of thousand students enrolled this year to begin their new college career at KAIST.
The ceremony proceeded with recitation of the freshmen pledge by student representatives, Yong-Tak Kim (a graduate from Korea Science Academy) and Hyun-Jin Oh (a graduate from Daejeon Science High School) and a welcome speech by President Nam Pyo Suh. At his speech, President Suh introduced to the freshmen a glimpse of new life at KAIST while stressing student development through involvement and leadership opportunities offered by the university.
After the welcome ceremony, KAIST Chorus, composed of existing students, performed a celebratory event. There was a meeting organized between school staff and parents as well. During the meeting, the faculty members (Kwang-Hyung Lee from Dean of Academic Affairs Office; Do-Kyung Kim, Dean of Admissions Office; and Kyung-Wook Paik, Dean of Academic and Student Affairs Office) and parents exchanged views on various topics such as educational programs and students’ campus life.
KAIST has shortened its winter recess and extended summer vacation to three months instead since 2009. Adopting such an academic calendar, KAIST hopes, will spur students to have diverse opportunities for more experiences beyond the school life.
