SK Telecom Vice Chairman Jung-Nam Cho appointed as Chairman of KAIST BOT
SK Telecom Vice Chairman Jung-Nam Cho appointed as Chairman of KAIST BOT KAIST Board of Trustees (BOT) appointed Jung-Nam Cho, Vice chairman of SK Telecom, as the chairman of KAIST BOT at its 178th special session, Tuesday, January 23, 2007. Chairman Cho graduated from Seoul National University (SNU) and studied business administration at University of California in Berkeley and Chief Executive Officer’s courses at the College of Business Administration of SNU. He served as managing director of technical part, etc. at Yugong, the predecessor of SK Corporation (1970 ? 1995) and the president of service and production division and the chairman of the central research institute at SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (1995-1997). He is the former vice chairman of the National Academy Engineering of Korea and, now, the chairman of Korean Radio Promotion Association and the chairman of Korea Amateur Fencing Association. He received an award for excellence in information and communication and Dongtap Industry Medal of the Ministry of Information and Communication for his contribution to world-first commercialization of CDMA in 2001. He also won a medal for his contribution to the development from Vietnam government in 2003. His chairmanship term is from January 23, 2007 thru April 13, 2007.

Final competition of 'UFC' contest
Final competition of ‘UFC’ contest Joint university team D-M2 won first prize The final winner of ‘the 2nd Ubiquitous Fashionable Computer (UFC) contest‘, co-hosted by KAIST and the Korean Society for Next-Generation Computing (KSNGC), was determined. At the final competition of November 17 among 9 qualified teams, the first prize went to D-M2, composed of students from Seokyeong University, Kookmin University, Hongik University, and Sungshin Women’s University. D-M2 manufactured a work utilizing a user’s motion information by applying motion capture technologies to UFC. Particularly, the work gained a high score at the item of the functional perfection by controlling the robot according to a user’s motion. The gold prize went to the smart jacket by Jjik-eo-cha-ki (Kwangwoon University and Duksung Women’s University). The smart jacket is embedded with an intelligent clothes function in terms of checking a user’s status in a real-time basis and delivering it to a doctor, etc. The silver and bronze prizes went to Samsung Software Membership (SSM) and Hanse University, respectively. SSM manufactured a training suit with sensors for grasping the movement of each articulation of a user built-in, and Hanse University developed a system enabling blinders to get a voice service of general documents or books regardless of time and place. The participants composed of university students or graduate students have passed the severe qualifying contest through the examination of written plan and presentation of last April and manufactured creative works that realize the fusion of IT technologies and fashion. At the contest, that fact that all winners of the first, gold, and silver prizes were the members of SSM gained more attention. UFC is a new field that pursuits the enhancement of computer technologies and the creation of fashion simultaneously by fusing IT technologies and fashions. UFC is a one-step advanced field of the existing wearable computer and an important cutting-edge field that leads a computer industry in the era of ubiquitous. “The level of the works exhibited was higher than I’d expected and the cooperation between the departments of Closing Textile and Electronics appeared to be so positive, which made me expect more brilliant future of the next-generation computing industry,” said Hoijoon You, Co-chairman of the contest and professor of the department of Electrical Engineering.

KAIST Chong-Moon Lee Library Opens
KAIST Chong-Moon Lee Library Opens Jong-Moon Lee Library, management education library for scientists possessing the biggest amount of entrepreneurship data in Asia, opens in KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) on Thursday, November 9, 2006. Jong-Moon Lee Library was planned when Jong-Moon Lee, Chairman of AmBex, donated 2 million dollar to KAIST and founded Entrepreneurship Research Center at KAIST in 2004. Chairman Lee emphasized on the necessity of management education for scientists of advanced technology-based venture companies and set the management plan for Jong-Moon Lee Library securing the biggest amount of Entrepreneurship data in Asia. Jong-Moon Lee Library possesses books for inspiring entrepreneurship, including ▲ books regarding how to prepare and evaluate business plans that support the realization of business ideas such as venture company founding, etc. ▲ administrative books necessary for company management such as leadership and finance, accounting, etc. ▲ economic books that foster reader’s insight over economy and society. The number of books is about 4,900 and various journals including Harvard Business Review are also provided. KAIST Entrepreneurship Research Center (President Tae-Yong Yang) is now carrying out ▲ the management of entrepreneurship library for Engineering students and businessmen ▲ programs for entrepreneurship education and venture-company founding ▲aid for business plan forums and academic conferences. It benchmarks Stanford Technology Venture Program (STVP) of Stanford University, which is evaluated the most excellent program in researches and realization of entrepreneurship, and manages education programs for scientific manpower with international managing minds on the basis of world’s best capabilities in scientific researches and education of KAIST. President Yang explained about the management plan by saying, “Following Chairman Jong-Moon Lee’s intention, the center will educate entrepreneurship to engineering students and properly diagnose initial values of excellent technologies, thereby making venture companies flourish.”

KAIST President's Advisory Council starts to operate
KAIST President’s Advisory Council starts to operate Composed of distinguished experts (six from abroad and seven from home) in the fields of industry, academy, and research To suppose development plan, provide political advices, and help fund-raising Consultation by distinguished experts from home and abroad starts to make KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) one of world’s top technology and science universities. KAIST held the first meeting of KAIST President’s Advisory Council (PAC), which has been composed for consultation over KAIST development plan (draft), at KAIST conference room, Wednesday, November 8, 2006. At the meeting, general introduction of KAIST and presentation of business plan by each college were made, and KAIST Education Innovation Center’s undergraduate education innovation plan (draft) and research plan by each of five KAIST institutes were explained. At the meeting, the PAC members discussed items to be carried out for the development plan (draft) and advised substantial measures to achieve the goals. After the meeting, the PAC members visited two laboratories to observe research sites. KAIST PAC is composed of celebrities possessing rich global management experiences at the top of the fields of industry, academy, and research from home and abroad and will perform various substantial roles such as suggesting development plans, providing political advices, and assisting fund-raising to advance KAIST into one of the world’s top 10 universities. The overseas members of KAIST PAC are Neil Pappalardo, Chairman of MEDITECH, Hock Tan, Chairman of Technology Inc., Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, President of Japanese Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology and former president of Tokyo University, John Holzrichter, President of Fannie and John Hertz Foundation, Jongmoon Lee, Chairman of AmBex Inc., and Byungjoon Park, CEO of Bureau Veritas CPS. And, the domestic members of KAIST PAC are Kyesik Min, Vice-chairman of Hyundai Heavy Industries, Heekuk Lee, President of LG Electronics, Youngchul Hong, Chairman of KISWIRE, Heebum Lee, Chairman of Korean International Trade Association, Yoonwoo Lee, Vice-chairman of Samsung Electronics, Dongjin Kim, Vice-chairman of Hyundai Motors, Youngsik Myung, President of GS CALTEX.

Best Prize to Sungwook Choi and Gold Prize to Heeseok Han at Paper Contest Best Prize to Sungwook Choi and Gold Prize to Heeseok Han at Fairchild Korea Graduate Student Paper Contest Sungwook Choi and Heeseok Han, both in doctorate course at KAIST Department of Electrical Engineering, won best prize and gold prize respectively at the 1st Fairchild Korea Graduate Student Paper Contest. The title of Choi’s paper is ‘Cost Effective Multi-Level Single Sustaining Driver for Plasma Display Panel with Dual Energy Recovery Path’. And the title of Han’s paper is ‘Digital Control IC for Electronic Ballast using Mixed Mode Excitation’. Choi’s paper proposes a new driver that can avoid the problems of IGBT, a power switch used at PDP driving circuit, gaining attention as next-generation display, for cost-reduction. Choi showed his feeling of pleasure by saying, “I’m very pleased that my paper can contribute to PDP popularization and development of power switch for PDP through cost-reduction. I’d like to acknowledge Professor Kunwoo Moon, who has instructed me with persistence and interest at all times.” Meanwhile, total 56 papers from 23 universities are applied for the contest, and total 11 papers were awarded after two rounds of examination in terms of novelty, creativeness, technical difficulties, etc. Awardees will be exempted from documentation test and are eligible for additive points when they hope to join Fairchild Korea.

Imaging technology expert from Hollywood becomes KAIST professor
Imaging technology expert from Hollywood becomes KAIST professor A U.S. imaging technology expert from Hollywood was appointed as KAIST professor. KAIST (President Nam-Pyo Suh) announced on September 18 that world-famous imaging technology expert Joonyong Noh, who deals with special effects at Hollywood, was appointed as assistant professor of Graduate School of Culture Technology. Professor Noh obtained Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Southern California and has been working at Rhythm & Hues, one of the world top three independent productions. He has developed special effects of 23 pieces of Hollywood films for the past three years and took charge of special effects of movies ‘Garfield’, ‘The Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King’, etc. which were released worldwide. His recent work is the film ‘Superman Returns’. In this film, Professor Noh skillfully expressed a scene of superman flying into a ship with virtual reality using simulation. Professor Noh also has shown great achievements in the fields of face animation, algorithm-based scenery generation, non-rigid body and fluid dynamics simulation. “I’ve performed various imaging works with advanced science and technology and arts combined in them at Hollywood. Based on such experiences, I will develop advanced imaging technologies along with KAIST students,” Professor Noh remarked his intention.
