KAIST Inks Agreement with KERI for EEWS Technological Cooperation
KAIST concluded an agreement with the Korea Institute of Energy Research for technological cooperation in the research on the four global issues of energy, environment, water and sustainability (EEWS) on Tuesday (April 15).
The agreement was signed by KAIST President Nam-Pyo Suh and Moon-Hee Han, director of the Korea Institute of Energy Research at the KAIST.
The agreement calls for building a cooperative network for exchanges of personnel and information, and joint use of research facilities and equipment between the two institutions. Under the agreement, KAIST and KIER will also jointly conduct scientific researches.
When it comes to personnel exchange, KAIST will appoint researchers of KIER as adjunct professors of KAIST, while KIER will appoint KAIST professors as its adjunct researchers. Undergraduate students of KAIST will be given an opportunity to join government-commissioned projects and participate in an internship program of the institute.

Computer Security Guru Ahn to Become Chair Professor at KAIST
Chul-Soo Ahn, founder of AhnLab Inc., Korea"s largest computer security company, will become a chair professor of KAIST, university authorities said on Monday (April 7).
Ahn, 46, who is currently taking an executive education course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the United States, will start teaching computer science students this fall.
In 1988 when he was a doctorate student at the Medical School of Seoul National University, Ahn developed a computer virus vaccine program and created a sensation in the fledgling computer security market. In 1995, he founded AhnLab and served as CEO for ten years. In 2005, he stepped down as CEO of AhnLab and left for the U.S. Currently, he is serving as chairman of the board of directors of AhnLab. University authorities said that KAIST decided to appoint Ahn as a chair professor in recognition of his profound knowledge in computer technology as well as extensive experiences in corporate management .

KAIST to Open Liaison Office in Silicon Valley
KAIST will open a liaison office in Silicon Valley, California, within the first half of this year to serve as a beachhead of its operations in the United States, university authorities announced Monday.
The opening of "KAIST America" office will be financially supported by the Silicon Valley-based Ambex Venture Group. The liaison office will be located at the first floor of the AmBex building in Sunnyvale.
The liaison office will be responsible for overseeing joint research between KAIST and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and KAIST"s other cooperative projects in research and development with enterprises and universities in Silicon Valley. It will also be engaged in forming a network among KAIST alumni members in the United States, raising funds within the U.S. and managing the money. The office will arrange KAIST students" internship in the companies in Silicon Valley.
"KAIST America is part of the globalization strategies that KAIST has pursued consistently. It is aimed at helping set up venture firms based on the technologies that KAIST has developed so far and generating funds needed for further development of the university," said Sun-Heung Jang, KAIST vice president.
AmBex, a venture capital company that invests in information technology, health science and financial service firms, was founded by Jong-Moon Lee, a member of Presidents" Advisory Council at KAIST. The AmBex building is situated near Stanford University, University of California in Berkeley, Google and Yahoo.
KAIST President Nam Pyo Suh will invite Stanford and UC Berkeley professors, executives of Silicon Valley enterprises and KAIST alumni in the area to the opening ceremony of the liaison office to be held some time in the first half of this year.

KAIST, K-Water Sign MOU for Cooperation in EEWS
KAIST has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water), a state-invested organization responsible for the development and management of inland water resources, for cooperation in the research on the four global issues of energy, environment, water and sustainability (EEWS).
The MOU was signed by KAIST President Suh Nam-Pyo and K-Water President Kwak Kyul-ho on Feb. 22 at the KAIST.
KAIST and K-Water agreed to establish a cooperative network for exchanges of personnel and research resources for advanced R&D on EEWS. The agreement has been reached on the common belief that EEWS is the most imminent problem facing the humanity in the 21st century.
Under the MOU, KAIST and K-Water will work together to build a EEWS global network; to develop policies and conduct researches to strengthen the competitiveness of Korea"s water industry; and to train and exchange research manpower of the two institutions. The agreement also calls for sharing technological information, exchanging research results and publications; and jointly hosting symposiums and workshops.

Students Meet with KAIST Development Foundation
A group of department representatives and distinguished school staff gathered on November 21st to discuss the future funding of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). Participants of the meeting included the Vice President, Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Welfare, the President of Undergraduate Student Association, and many more. The Vice President explained that students and alumnae are the owners of KAIST and should take pride in the successful development of KAIST. He also added that they should share the same goal of supporting KAIST to become the world"s leading institute of science and technology.
Statistics show a noticeable correlation between a university"s status in world rankings and the percentage of its alumni donation participants. In the case of top U.S. universities, a large number of their alumnae donate astronomical sums of money in hopes to contribute to the school"s development. For example, in 2006, a whopping 61% of the Princeton University alumni participated in school donations, while - in stark contrast - a meager 1.1% of 31,000 KAIST alumnae made monetary contributions. Perhaps this low level of donation participation explains why KAIST is making little progress in its efforts to advance into a globally-recognized university.
"Before we die, many of us look back and regret "I should"ve earned a little more"," said the Vice President. "But what we should really reflect on is how I could"ve given a little more." Throughout the meeting, he reiterated the significance of enrolled students practicing donation, no matter how insignificant the amount, when they are still young.
KAIST is currently receiving support from its alumni, parents, students, corporations, foundations, professors and staff. With a growing demand for increasing the number of professors, research fees and labor budget, however, KAIST requires the full support and dedication of students and alumnae alike if it is to fulfill its vision of becoming the academic leader in science and technology- it is essential for students to get accustomed to the habit of donating to the school. KAIST Graduate Selected As Winner of IEEE Outstanding Young Engineer Award
- First Korean winner of IEEE Outstanding Young Engineer Award
Dr. Myung-Jin Rhim, Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D of KAIST, has been selected to receive 2007 Outstanding Young Engineer Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Components, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Society. Dr. Rhim will be the first Korean winner of the award.
Dr. Rhim received his Ph.D of Materials Science & Engineering at KAIST in 2001 and has made outstanding research outputs, such as 28 papers at international journals covered by Science Citation Index (SCI) and 12 international patents. He has been also listed in Marquis Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders, Who’s Who in Asia, and Outstanding Intellectual of the 21st Century, 21st Century Award for Achievement published by the International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England.
IEEE CPMT Society has yearly awarded the Outstanding Young Engineer Award to a scientist or engineer of electronic components, packaging, and manufacturing technology prior to his or her 35th birthday in recognition of his or her research achievements. Dr. Rhim is now in his postdoctoral program at Georgia Institute of Technology in USA.

KAIST to Publish Newsletter - ‘KAISTAR’
First edition on May 7To be issued every two weeks
KAIST (President Nam Pyo Suh) will be publishing the first edition of a newsletter targeting high school students on May 7. The newsletter is named ‘KAISTAR’, combination of ‘KAIST’ and ‘STAR’, meaning any KAIST students can be a world-class star in scientific circles. The newsletter will be issued every two weeks, beginning May 7.
KAISTAR is designed to convey a variety of happenings in KAIST to prospective students, thereby letting them know the excellences of KAIST and consequently attracting further talented students to the school. The newsletter will cover introduction of departments and student clubs, stories about graduates, and various events. KAIST is expecting the newsletter will play key roles in advertising the school to high school students. “The publication of KAISTAR is a brand-new challenge that informs the authentic aspects of KAIST to attract talented young boys and girls. I’m sure the authentic aspects of KAIST conveyed by KAISTAR will make prospective students and their parents ensure the excellences of KAIST,” said President Suh, giving his congratulatory remark to the publication. Professor Sang-Yup Lee Named Senior Editor of U.S. Biotechnology Journal
Will supervise paper examination in the fields of system biology, system bioengineering and
metabolic engineering, and set editing direction
Professor Sang-Yup Lee, LG Chemical’s Chair-Professor and the leader of BK project group of KAIST Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, was named senior editor of Biotechnology Journal published by the U.S. Wiley-VCH.
Professor Lee will supervise paper examination in the fields of system biology, system bioengineering and metabolic engineering, and set and manage the editing direction of the journal.
‘Biotechnology Journal’ was first published in January 2006 to exchange rapidly-exchanging knowledge and information in life science and its relevant fields by Wiley, a world-famous science journal publisher with the history of 208 years (founded in 1799). Particularly, ‘Biotechnology Journal’ is a new-typed scientific journal treating various fields such as life science research-relevant ethics and cultures necessary for general people as well as expertise research information of life science.
“Although taking charge of editing of many scientific journals spends much time, it’s very fruitful that I’ll lead the direction of research papers of many world-famous scientific journals and I can make efforts to prevent outstanding papers by Korean scientists from being disadvantaged,” said Professor Lee.
“More Korean scholars are taking charge of editing jobs of world-famous scientific journals. It’s a good indication that the capacities of Korean science and engineering have been enhanced significantly as much,” a staff of KAIST PR team said.

SK Telecom Vice Chairman Jung-Nam Cho appointed as Chairman of KAIST BOT
KAIST Board of Trustees (BOT) appointed Jung-Nam Cho, Vice chairman of SK Telecom, as the chairman of KAIST BOT at its 178th special session, Tuesday, January 23, 2007.
Chairman Cho graduated from Seoul National University (SNU) and studied business administration at University of California in Berkeley and Chief Executive Officer’s courses at the College of Business Administration of SNU. He served as managing director of technical part, etc. at Yugong, the predecessor of SK Corporation (1970 ? 1995) and the president of service and production division and the chairman of the central research institute at SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (1995-1997). He is the former vice chairman of the National Academy Engineering of Korea and, now, the chairman of Korean Radio Promotion Association and the chairman of Korea Amateur Fencing Association.
He received an award for excellence in information and communication and Dongtap Industry Medal of the Ministry of Information and Communication for his contribution to world-first commercialization of CDMA in 2001. He also won a medal for his contribution to the development from Vietnam government in 2003.
His chairmanship term is from January 23, 2007 thru April 13, 2007.

Yoonsun Doh Wins ‘Outstanding Poster Paper Award’ at IDW
Yoonsun Doh, a master-course student at the Division of Electrical Engineering (Advisory professor Kyungchul Choi) won the Outstanding Poster Paper Award at IDW 2006, which was held at Otsu, Japan on December 8, 2006.
The title of Doh’s paper is ‘Relationship between IR Emission of Reset Discharge and Image Retention in AC PDP’.
At the paper, Doh proposed a method capable of quantitatively measuring the temporary image-sticking phenomena, which is raised as a problem that impairs the quality of images on an AC PDP.

Youngseok Son and Yongjoon Chun won a prize of Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister
Youngseok Son and Yongjoon Chun, doctorate students at circuit design and system application lab of Electrical Engineering Division, won a prize of Commerce, Industry and Energy Minister (Silver prize) at the 7th Semiconductor Design Contest hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office.
Their work exhibited at the contest is ‘a driving circuit for the improvement of image quality of AMOLED display’.
AMOLED display is gaining attention as a next-generation display for its numberless advantages compared to AMLCD and PDP, however, problems over the image quality and lifespan of the display have disturbed the substantial development. Their work verified its electrical features by proposing and designing the driving method and circuit for the improvement of the image quality and lifespan of AMOLED display. The announced driving method was named ‘Transient Cancellation Feedback (FCF)’ and its concept was published in SID 2006. Their work was evaluated to overcome the limitation of the existing driving methods by providing an intrinsic Active Matrix structure, different from the existing driving methods.
It is also evaluated to strikingly enhance the speed and accuracy of data current driving through TCF driving. It is expected to significantly enhance the image quality and lifespan of AMOLED displays by applying TCF driving.

Sungil Chung listed in Who’s Who following last year
Sungil Chung, senior researcher of KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center (STRC), is listed in the international biographical dictionary Marquis Who"s Who’s Who’s Who in the America Edition 2007 following last year. He is also listed in the first edition of Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders.
Ph.D. Chung majored in Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) at Texas A&M University and worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center for a research in the field of aerospace vehicle-related thermal control. He has worked at KAIST STRC as senior researcher from September this year.
He has won an Innovation and Creativity Prize Paper Award from the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2004.
