KAIST to Host FinTech Conference 2018
KAIST will be hosting a FinTech Conference with Princeton University (USA), Tsinghua University (China), and EDHEC Business School (France) in Seoul from April 12 to 13 titled State of the Art in Robo-Advising Systems: Financial Technologies for Enhanced Social Security. The Bendhein Center for Finance and Department of Operations Research and Financial Engineering from Princeton University, Fintech Lab from Tsinghua University, and the Risk Institute from EDHEC will participate as co-hosting organizations in this conference organized by the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering and the KAIST Center for Wealth Management Technologies. The conference will discuss issues required for providing customized asset management to the public in terms of theory, technology, and industry. During the conference, KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin and Chairman and CEO of the National Pension Service Sung Joo Kim will deliver welcoming addresses. Professor John Mulvey from Princeton University, Professor Michael Dempster from Cambridge University, Professors Wei Xu and Changle Lin from Tsinghua University, Professor Lionel Martellini from EDHEC, and Professor Woo Chang Kim from KAIST are some of the invited speakers at the event. Moreover, renowned experts in related fields will also participate in the conference, including Founder of Vanguard Group John Bogle, Jin Lee from Ant Financial, Youngsuh Cho from Shinhan Financial Group, Jung-Hwan Lee from Samsung Asset Management, and Hye Young Sung from the National Pension Service Research Institute. Professor Kim said, “Only a small number of wealthy people can receive life-cycle customized asset management services due to the high cost structure; however, new technology derived from the Fourth Industrial Revolution can reduce the service price in an innovative manner, ultimately leading it to be popularized.” “In an era with the poverty rate of older people reaching almost 50%.Fintech can enable individuals to manage their assets in an active manner, reinforcing social security without additional social costs in the period,” he added. These four universities have been hosting the FinTech Conference since 2017. China will host the conference this fall, followed by France next year. Two Professors Receive the Asan Medical Award
(Professor Ho Min Kim and Chair Profesor Eunjoon Kim (from far right) Chair Professor Eunjoon Kim of the Department of Biological Sciences and Professor Ho Min Kim from the Graduate School of Medical Science & Engineering won the 11th Asan Medical Award in the areas of basic medicine and young medical scholar on March 21. The Asan Medical Award has been recognizing the most distinguished scholars in the areas of basic and clinical medicines annually since 2007. Chair Professor Kim won the 300 million KRW award in recognition of his research in the mechanism of synaptic brain dysfunction and its relation with neural diseases. The young medical scholar’s award recognizes a promising scholar under the age of 40. Professor Kim won the award for identifying the key protein structure and molecular mechanism controlling immunocytes and neurons. He earned a 50 million KRW prize.

Open Online Course in Science and Technology, STAR-MOOC
Four universities specializing in science and technology, along with POSTECH and UST, teamed up to establish programs for innovation in education programs, responding to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. KAIST held an opening ceremony for the Science & Technology Advanced Research - Massive Open Online Course (STAR-MOOC) and signed an MoU with GIST, DGIST, UNIST, POSTECH, and UST. STAR-MOOC was launched on February 26 to provide educational service to the public. It is a joint platform where people can take courses featuring lectures from professors from universities specializing in science and technology as well as national research universities. It offers 15 courses covering basics, majors, and electives related to science and technology developed by the STAR-MOOC committee. Students can take a variety of courses. At the opening ceremony, KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin, DGIST President Sang Hyuk Son, UST President Kil Choo Moon, POSTECH Vice President Wankyun Chung, UNIST Vice President Jae Sung Lee, GIST Vice President of Public Affairs Pil-hwan Park came to sign the MoU for provising educational services for the public. During the ceremony, there was also time to introduce a technical agreement with a non-profit organization founded by NAVER, the CONNECT Foundation, for its courses and platform. Universities participating in STAR-MOOC will put effort into capacity building in response to changes driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. President Shin said, “STAR-MOOC is a platform that provides science and technology courses from basics to electives and major courses. The 8th KINC Fusion Research Awardees
The KAIST Institute for NanoCentury held the 8th KINC Fusion Research Award in order to encourage professors’ convergence studies and instill students’ willingness to research. The award ceremony took place in the KI Building at KAIST on March 13. The KINC Fusion Research Award selects the most outstanding convergence studies among research undertaken last year, and awards researchers who participated in that research. The 8th KINC Fusion Research Award went to Professor Yoon Sung Nam from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Professor Inkyu Park from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Their research reported the spontaneous self-biomineralization of palladium (Pd) ions on a filamentous virus to form ligand-free Pd nanowires without reducing reagents or using additional surface stabilizers (Title: Virus-Templated Self-Mineralization of Ligand-Free Colloidal Palladium Nanostructures for High Surface Activity and Stability, Advanced Functional Materials (2017)). Professor Hee-Tae Jung, the Director of KAIST Institute for the NanoCentury and the host of the KINC Fusion Research Award said, “Convergence will be the crucial keyword that will lead to revolutionary change. Hence, the importance of convergence study should be improved. We will put every effort into creating a research environment for increasing convergence study. The KAIST Institute for the NanoCentury was established in June 2006 under the KAIST Institute with a mission of creating convergence study by tearing down boarders among departments and carrying out interdisciplinary joint research. Currently, approximately 90 professors from 14 departments participate the institute. It aims to become a hub of university institutes for nano-fusion research.

Blockchain and Cryptocurrency: Between Reality and Virtuality
A workshop on blockchain and cryptocurrency, one of the 4th Industrial Revolution Workshop Series, was held at the KAIST main campus on March 7. Experts from industry, academia, and research gathered and shared their opinions about blockchain technology, which is currently gaining huge attention along with cryptocurrency. During the workshop, four KAIST professors and four experts from institutes and business examined the scope on the possibility of blockchain, technology for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Moreover, they discussed a variety of issues including mining, wallets, cryptocurrency, information security, smart contracts, and ICOs. In a previous blockchain tutorial, Professor Yongdae Kim from the School of Electrical Engineering at KAIST and Professor Hyoungshick Kim from Sungkyunkwan University opened up a blockchain tutorial which provided a technical understanding of blockchain, such as the birth of cryptocurrency, algorithm design, and exchange methods. Professor Jungho Kim, who is in charge of this event, said, “This workshop will broaden the understanding of blockchain, which can provide a foundation for a national growth engine.”

MoU Signed by the Republic of Korea Army and KAIST
(From left: KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin and ROKA Chief of Staff Youngwoo Kim) On March 7, the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) and KAIST signed an MoU and opened special sessions dedicated to the army in order to reinforce research and development capacities. The close partnership between KAIST and ROKA will provide an opportunity to establish advanced combat development systems. Through the MoU, signed by KAIST President Sung-Chul Shin and ROKA Chief of Staff Youngwoo Kim, both organizations will discuss new opportunities for cooperation between academia and military and establish an institute and its curriculum. KAIST is offering special sessions for the army March 5-9, where about 150 executives from ROKA, including the headquarters, education and training command, and logistics command, will participate. These session are expected to enhance the army’s capabilities through education on cutting-edge equipment that will emerge during the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The director of the KAIST Security Convergence Institute, Soo Hyun Kim, said, “KAIST and ROKA will plan and operate various programs together though this partnership as well as special sessions. I hope this cooperation will be an opportunity to enhance the combat development of ROKA.”

The 22nd Humanistic Education Opens to Daejeon Citizens
The KAIST Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences will open up the 22nd Humanistic Education for Citizens every week from March 21 to April 25. People can apply for this program through its website (http://hss.kaist.ac.kr), starting from March 12. Anyone living in Daejeon can participate in this program at no charge but the program is limited to 100 participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. KAIST Humanistic Education for Citizens was established in 2012 and is held four times during a year to reinforce bonding with local citizens and enhance cultural refinement and an appreciation of literature. With the topic ‘Are News Facts?” the seminar has invited six lecturers, including Researcher Soo Young Kim from the Institute of Communication Research, to navigate various issues that smart news users need to know in this era of massive news consumption. The lecture is dedicated to discussing a current hot issue, the phenomenon of fake news, from various perspectives and to promote smart news consumption. It will also help to provide an understanding of legal and policy changes regarding media production and distribution. Professor Donghwan Ko, who is also the dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences said, “The lectures will provide information on various issues that people need to know more about for smart news consumption in the “infoglut” era from media, psychological, social, and legal perspectives.” The lectures will be held every Wednesday at 3pm in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Harnessing the Strength of KAIST Alumni: New Head of KAA Inaugurated
KAIST alumni gathered in Seoul on January 13 to celebrate the New Year and the newly-elected leadership of the KAIST Alumni Association (KAA). Photo: Ki-Chul Cha(left) and Jung Sik Koh(right) The KAA inaugurated its new president, Ki-Chul Cha, who was preceded by Jung Sik Koh, the former CEO at the Korea Resources Corporation. His term starts from January 2018 to December 2020. Cha is the CEO of Inbody Co Ltd., a global company specializing in developing and selling medical instruments, such as a body composition analyzers, and medical solutions. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Yonsei University. Cha obtained a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at KAIST in 1980, and a Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of Utah, before finishing his post-doc fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Cha plans to explore the idea that alumni engagement, saying, “KAIST stays as a home in the memories of 60,000 alumni. I will dedicate myself to stimulating the alumni association to make KAISTians proud.” At the gala event, the KAA awarded the Alumni of the Year honor to six alumni who distinguished themselves in the areas of professional achievement, humanitarianism, and public service. Distinguished Alumni Awards 2017 by KAIST Alumni Association
The KAIST Alumni Association announced six Distinguished Alumni Awardees for the year 2017. Every year, the association selects alumni who have brought honor and distinction to the university through significant contributions to industry, academic achievements, or community service. Since 1992, a total of 95 alumni have been chosen for the distinguished alumni awards. The recipients are playing major roles in society, and this year is no exception. The award will be given to the alumni during the KAIST New Year Ceremony on January 13 in Seoul. Here are the six distinguished alumni of the year 2017. The Director of Startup KAIST, Byoung Yoon Kim (M.S. in Physics) is one of the faculty who has brought entrepreneurship to KAIST. Before founding companies, he held the position of assistant professor at Stanford University. In 1995, he founded FiberProf Inc, commercializing research results from KAIST lab for their applications to test and measurement equipment for lab and production lines. He launched Novera Optics, Inc in 1999 which produced broadband access network equipment (WDM-PON) for FTFH application. Since 2014, he has been holding the position of director of KAIST Startup and inspiring entrepreneurship. He is being recognized for playing a crucial role in defining a successful model for technology startup ecosystems. The President of LG Chem Ltd., and Head of Battery Research and Development, Myung Hwan Kim (M.S. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) succeeded in developing and producing the first lithium ion batteries in Korea. His work contributed to Korea becoming the second most powerful nation in batteries. In particular, he obtained more orders from global automobile companies by successfully commercializing batteries for electronic vehicles, which led elevating national competitiveness. Recently, his company is leading the battery market for automobiles and power storage by developing novel materials and supplying optimal batteries to match each field. The Director of INNOX Advanced Materials Co., Ltd., Kyung Ho Chang (M.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering) challenged himself in the Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPCB) industry, which was mostly dominated by Japanese companies in 2001; however, he succeeded in localizing the materials. Now, his company is the number one for FPCB materials in Korea. FPCBs are a component used in most electronic devices, including smartphones and tablet PCs. Localizing the materials has brought about an import substitution effect as well as establishing a foundation for national competitiveness in FPCBs. The Vice President of the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), Jung-kwan Kim (M.S. in Business) began his career from deputy director in Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Throughout his career at MOTIE, he served as Director for Energy Development, Director General for Energy Industry Policy, Head Officer of Energy and Resources, and finally Vice Minister for MOTIE. Since joining KITA as the vice president in 2015, he has contributed to supporting overseas expansion of new industries and reinforcing trade competitiveness through opening new markets and providing customized consulting. The CEO of Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Yun-tae Lee (M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering) is an expert in designing semiconductors. While serving as Head of System LSI and Head of LCD in Samsung Electronics, he made significant contributions to projects involving semiconductors and displays, which are the company’s engine of growth. Moreover, by utilizing his insights from the component business and making bold decisions, he is leading the future of Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The CEO of ENF Technology, Jinbae Jung (Ph.D. in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) reinforced national industrial competitiveness by developing high-performance chemicals that are used mostly in the production of semiconductors and displays. Especially, he succeeded in applying regeneration technology of thinners and developing various stripping liquidsHe also localized color pastes, which were heavily dependent on Japan, and improved the quality of color accuracy for LCD panels. A Glance at the 2017 KAIST Literary Awards Ceremony
Since KAIST is a university specializing in science and engineering, people may think that the students rarely engage in literary activities. But KAIST students also excel in writing literature. The 23rd KAIST Literary Award Ceremony was held on December 14 on the KAIST main campus. The award was established in 1995 to encourage students’ creative activities and to promote literary attainment. It is open to all KAIST students from undergraduate to masters and PhD students. This year, 43 students submitted a total of 68 literary works in the genres of poetry, novel, critique, and scenario. KAIST professors Dong Ju Kim, Bong Gwan Jun, and Yunjeong Jo from the School of Humanities & Social Sciences participated as judges for the awards and they were joined by writers from the 8th Endless Road Program who served as invited judges for the novels and scenarios. The Endless Road Program is a KAIST project for supporting artists who are engaged in literary works including scenarios, novels, webtoons, and movies by providing residences and funds. Novelists Jin Young Choi and Hak Chan Kim participated as judges for the novels and a drama scriptwriter, Joo Kim, as a judge of the scenarios. After thorough evaluation, four submissions were chosen as awardees. KAIST International Community Celebrates the Year-End
KAIST international community all gathered in celebration of the year-end on December 5 at the KAIST auditorium. This year, the community made the year-end party very special, expressing their appreciation very touching way at the event hosted by the International Scholar and Student Services (ISSS). Nearly 650 international faculty, students, and their family members joined the party. Currently, 184 faculty members and researchers from 29 countries are working at KAIST, with 901 international students from 92 countries enrolled. The two-hour party offered them a chance to enjoy a wide variety of activities and events, including dance performances, student performances, games, and dinner. The party also had a meaningful award ceremony. Prior to the event, a month-long survey was conducted, asking international scholars and students which on-campus team they were most thankful for this year. Candidates for the appreciation award were: Safety and Security Team, Student Affairs Team, Campus Police, dormitory supervisors, and campus cleaning staff. Approximately 470 scholars and students responded to the survey and 214 voted for the campus cleaning staff (45.5%). (President Sung-Chul Shin and Myeongja Kim) Ms. Myeongja Kim, a director of the cleaning staff in the undergraduate zone, received the award on behalf of the entire cleaning staff. At the ceremony, President Sung-Chul Shin conferred the award. President Shin in his welcoming remarks said that globalization is his priority and urgent mission. To make KAIST more globalized, he said he will focus on three agendas; to make the campus KAIST a more welcoming environment for international community; to make campus more inclusive and diverse; to enhance the global visibility of KAIST more proactively. A New Spin Current Generating Material Developed
(Professor Park(left) and Ph.D. candidate Kim) Magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) is a non-volatile device made of thin magnetic film that can maintain information without an external power supply, in contrast to conventional silicon-based semiconductor memory. It also has the potential for high-density integration and high-speed operation. The operation of MRAM involves the control of the magnetization direction by exerting spin current-induced torque on a magnetic material. Spin current is generated using electricity in conventional MRAM, but this study developed materials technology that generates spin current using heat. A KAIST research team led by Professor Byong-Guk Park of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering developed a material that generates spin current from heat, which can be utilized for a new operation principle for MRAM. There have been theoretical reports on the spin Nernst effect, the phenomenon of the thermal generation of spin current, but is yet to have been experimentally proven due to technological limitations. However, the research team introduced a spin Nernst magnetoresistance measurement method using tungsten (W) and platinum (Pt) with high spin orbit coupling which allows for the experimental identification of the spin Nernst effect. They also demonstrated that the efficiency of spin current generation from heat is similar to that of spin current generated from electricity. Professor Park said, “This research has great significance in experimentally proving spin current generation from heat, a new physical phenomenon. We aim to develop the technology as a new operational method for MRAM through further research. This can lower power consumption, and is expected to contribute to the advancement of electronics requiring low power requirement such as wearable, mobile, and IOT devices”. This research was conducted as a joint research project with Professor Kyung-Jin Lee at Korea University and Professor Jong-Ryul Jeong at Chungnam National University. It was published in Nature Communications online on November 9 titled “Observation of transverse spin Nernst magnetoresistance induced by thermal spin current in ferromagnet/non-magnet bilayers.” Ph.D. candidate Dong-Jun Kim at KAIST is the first author.
